refuge is a platform for some of the finest organisers, noise makers and selectors in the community, and takes place on the unceded sovereign lands of the Turbal & Yuggera peoples. they were the first storytellers, dancers & musicians here, and their rich and ongoing connection to these lands and waters are sacred. to honour them, we must mark new heights of radical care, collectivism and disruption.

since taking to music seriously in 2025, brisbane based DJ and producer ethan johnson (@ethnjohnsn ) has already made a significant contribution to the community through his event and mix series @phrygia.recs , which has become an important and high production value platform for many in the meanjin dance community, focusing on the city’s slower, deeper or more minimalistic house + techno artists
as a DJ, Ethan’s sound has developed in nuanced ways, deeply rooted in techno but moving around the slower, moodier and atmospheric fringes. this often providing a unique respite against the current trend of playing harder and faster.
ethan’s ethos of platforming new artists, creating spaces otherwise lacking and his hi-effort approach with his phrygia project align closely with what we are trying to achieve with blip, so it is a pleasure to welcome him to open the party for us next saturday

We are proud to be hosting a true dancefloor savant in the form of @hauznated . Hailing from Japan, he has been a pivotal figure within more leftfield techno developments in the country since the turn of the millennium, having firmly established themselves as one of the pre-eminent talents of their native country. Being one half of the brains trust behind the cult classic imprint Cabaret Records, they explore techno, electro, acid and house with a precise technical edge, yet while retaining a wide eyed sense of love and a playful approach to genre boundaries. They are a true legend, and this is not one to miss!
On support duties we have a mixture of emerging and established local favourites in the form of @ethnjohnsn , @its__jaime and @george_andrewz .

The inaugural recording for our @thequivr residency arrives with @zhang1e_ & @ethnjohnsn 🏢🪩 In Meanjin, it’s rare for techno and minimal to come alive within an intimate bar context. The laneway blurred the line between dancefloor and artist, with the crowd becoming a part of the mix.
Zhangie & Ethan’s mix flaunts their eclectic taste in refined techno. Their shared appreciation for Efdemin and mid-2010’s Ostgut Ton records was in inspiration going into the night and is evident throughout the course of the set.
The initial building phases of the mix flows between minimal and ‘housier’ techno cuts as they lay a foundation for the last hour of raw and emotional main floor techno.
Half of the brain behind the @dissentbne operation, Zhangie is a key player in building Meanjin’s music scene… be sure to head to their upcoming show in which they have booked Berlin-based, contemporary underground icon Reka Zalan.

blip is beyond excited to announce our second party of the summer series. with our last event held overnight in the beautiful brisbane outdoors, our next date will be during the day in an intimate, new and not used before inner-city venue set to become our new home. a 2pm start, come early and stay late…
we will announce the location on the day, but the formula remains the same. extended sets, a hi-quality soundsystem and the blip sound.
after blowing us away with her opening set at the daura party, we had to bring @lilkattyhan back up from tasmania, this time with a well-deserved peak time billing. it’s also a first appearance at blip for co-founder and vinyl wunderkind, @creasedvenetian as well as being joined by our phyrgian collaborator and meanjin minimal techno staple @ethnjohnsn . @ppppppuddinggggggg returns to finish what he started at the first party, and we’ve invited a new discovery from one of our trips down to byron - mattia, aka @peratekkk , a northern rivers based italian dj who really impressed us with his sound a few months back

New year, new home 🏢✨🪩 This year we’re expanding on Meanjin’s thriving dance scene with a series of free parties in the iconic Quivr Laneway - a space that has been a hotbed of creativity for the better half of a decade.
Our first edition at @thequivr will play host to a stunning line-up featuring two live sets, a vinyl-only set and an exciting back-to-back 🛸
This program has been put together to showcase the raw, understated talent that this city is birthing. Expect pristine sound design erupting from a live system, mixed with druggy yet punchy minimal and techno.

The Phrygia Recordings co-owner debuts on the platform with a short mix that leans heavily on visceral stabs and atmospheric pads.
@ethnjohnsn aims to provide a ritualistic and minimal experience that remains subterranean in theme throughout the entirety of the mix.
While in its early stages, Phrygia has entered the Brisbane techno zeitgeist with a mission to push local talent out into the online space. This mix is no exception.
