Recently Iāve been thinking a lot about how Earth Month transforms directly into May Day, aka International Workersā Day.
The history of International Workersā Day traces back to the USA in the 1880s, where unions pushed for an eight-hour workday through strikes and demonstrations. In May 1886, more than 300,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day celebration in history. In Chicago, the epicentre of the 8-hour day demonstrators, a rally turned deadly when a bomb exploded and police fired into the crowd (how many were killed has not been determined, it isnāt known who threw the bomb). Several activists, many of them immigrants, were convicted of conspiracy and other charges; four were executed (The remaining organisers were pardoned six years later by the Governor, who publicly lambasted the judge on a travesty of justice).
Unions later designated May 1 to honour workers. The day is observed in most of the world, with unions often using May Day to rally around wages, pensions, inequality and broader political issues.
This year, global May Day protests saw millions call to tax the rich, abolish ICE, demand better wages and fairer contracts, and to end funding for imperial violence in Gaza, Iran, Lebanon (and more).
These dates being next to each other in the calendar serves as an important reminder of how inherently linked these struggles are. There is no climate justice without liberation for the working class. There is no livable planet while a billionaire class of genocidaires continues on, there is no better future while millions fear violence, abuse and deportation due to rising fascism and racism. While arbitrary borders and ācurbs on immigrationā exist.
There is a better world out there, but it requires radical transformation in all these areas, not just the same but greener. There is no Earth Month without May Day.
