At the heart of the exhibition are Peter Badge portraits of Nobel Peace laureates, including Malala Yousafzai and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, faces shaped by courage, faith, and conviction. In dialogue with these portraits, international and Los Angeles-based artists respond with their own visual language, layering stories of conflict, displacement, resilience, and hope. California-based artist Cole Sternberg (@colesternberg ) works across painting, sculpture, and film to explore humanity's complex and inevitable bond with nature, asking what remains when human ambition meets the forces of the natural world. His painting, "her stripes faded, but for a moment of lilac glory guarding against the sun" (2018), captures that tension through layered washes of color evoking light, water, and slow change. Paired with his work is a portrait of Al Gore by photographer Peter Badge. Gore was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless effort to bring the climate crisis to the world's attention, recognized by the Nobel Committee as one of the most effective communicators the environmental movement has ever had. Together, they ask: what does it mean to protect what we love before it fades? Our first school mural is here! 🙌 Last week, ESMoA and Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary School (@fdr.tigers ) unveiled “Every Book is a World You Can Walk Into,” a vibrant mural by artist Stephanie Mercado (@smprojekts ), created with nearly 70 Roosevelt 5th graders through STARTlab (Story and Art Lab). Students took the stage, families gathered, art was made, and a community came together. 🌸 This is what happens when we invest in young artists. A big thank you to Stephanie Mercado, this impactful mural would not exist without you and the Roosevelt students, and hopefully this is just the beginning of many more to come :) Thank you to the Ruth & Joseph C. Reed Foundation for the Arts, the Lawndale, Manhattan Beach & South Bay Sunrise Rotary Clubs or their generous support in making the STARTlab program and this mural possible. Thank you to El Comal de Mexico (@elcomaldemexico ) for feeding our families with love.
