‘The National Portrait Gallery belongs to us,’ says @esdevlin . Through a new partnership with @googleartsculture and the @nationalportraitgallery , the artist is inviting the public to participate in an evolving, collective portrait project on display at the gallery until until 27 October.
The portraits are created with an AI tool that Devlin has been training for the past few years using her own chalk and charcoal portraits, plus contributions from her studio’s collaborators for art, music and moving image, merging her artistic approach with machine-made elements. ‘I thought, what if we used the tools that separate us, to unite us,’ she explained.
Titled ‘A National Portrait for the National Portrait Gallery’, the project offers ‘a counterpoint to today’s often fractious discourse on “Britishness”, framing national identity as a continuous, always fragile process of collective authorship, shaped by participation and mutual recognition.’

Yesterday I went to a dazzling exhibition by dear friend Es Devlin at the National Portrait Gallery. The piece is such an interesting idea. It’s called “A National Portrait for the National Portrait Gallery”. It’s a digital artwork developed by Es and invites every adult in the UK to become a ‘co-author’ of a changing, evolving series of self portraits, via the NPG app or in person on a QR code. Es and her work are totally inspiring. Egalitarian and fantastic.
Entre espelhos, palavras, silêncios e imagens, somos todos um pouco o outro do outro. Na expressão artística de Es Devlin, reencontro a arte de aproximar olhares e reconhecer no outro um pouco de nós mesmos.

Mesmerizing experience at @casabradesco at @esdevlin 's exhibition. Es Devlin is one of the hottest artists right now. Between mirrors, books, lights and shared drawings, Devlin transforms the aesthetic experience into a relationship. At Casa Bradesco, the visitor not only observes the work, but they traverse it, participate in it, and take away a fragment of memory. At the end of the journey, the simple and powerful realization remains that we only become ourselves in relation and we are, inevitably, the other of the other.
