When we started in January — after closing out at Nia Centre and coming back from New York...
There were moments I had no idea what I was doing, but I had faith...
There were moments when life felt like it was folding in on me — and then I’d step into a session and come out grounded, ready to take on the world.
There were days I cried, hyperventilating!!! right before presenting.
And days where the work flowed like breeze.
All of it shaped me.
Strengthened me.
Readjusted my posture and fixed my crown.
Through this process, I developed the Moomzel Methodology — a Dancehall-centered movement practice rooted in embodiment, language, riddim, and lived experience.
Not just steps. Not just choreography.
But a way of working that asks:
How do we arrive?
How do we move?
How do we feel?
How do we hold space — for ourselves and each other?
This work was deeply shaped through my one-to-one residency with @dr.dbiyounganitafrika
Dear Doc…
Thank you for the reminders.
For the challenges.
For the push, the care, and the sternness.
For the yeses, the nos, and the redirections.
For holding my hand — and knowing when to let it go.
(And yes… the laughs, the head tilts, the knitted brows, the forehead rubs, and the “wait… what?” moments too.)
This work is also informed by Reading Religion and Spirituality in Jamaican Reggae Dancehall Dance: Spirit Bodies Moving by H. Patten, which continues to expand how I understand Dancehall as more than movement — but as spiritual, cultural, and embodied practice.
Grateful for the support of the Canada Arts Council for making this space for research and creation possible.
And always… shout out to my teachers and mentors near and far whose teachings live in my body and move through me daily.
I used to think I knew where my career was supposed to go.
I didn’t.
Now I understand the difference between what I was asking for…
and what I was running toward.
There is clarity now.

I remember @dir.kierankhan giving me the call and expressing the ideas needed for movement and the deadlines for submissions...All while In the middle of the Trinidad carnival season!
I remember not even giving it a second thought and saying f*vk it let's do this. I'm getting this and I'm getting this done!
I went in the lab the moment I got off the call and sent in drafts of the choreo, within 24 - 48 hrs the choreo was set.
I can't thank you enough for trusting me with this project. I knew what it meant for you to do this. It was truly an honour 🙏🏽💕✨.

To my lovely sisters in dance who also lent me their bodies to sell the vision @iam_kayann@zahra_abena !! Thank you so much for responding to my urgency and getting it done. You played such an important role in this. Thank you thank you thank you!

The only thing that had me worried was the fact that I could not be there, lol. (I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my ish) until I found out that @shaiannroach would be on site to ensure everything was clean and potentially edit what's necessary.
Though it was a long distance work relationship, it was such a dream!! Finally!!
Thank you for answering my every video and voice call, lol.
The brain storming and quick solution for changes where necessary was *chefs kiss*

I don't approach every work the same, I'm learning that I can't... I've fallen in love with "playing" and processing before and during creation.
IN THE LAB,
I write a rough story out, I build different types of choreo according to the amount of peeps that are in the piece and genres. I write some more, I talk to myself and walk through what exists of the piece thus far.
I map that bad boy out, process and map again.
I step away, then return to it and write some more and the process continues... LOL
