Winning the @wsl Rookie Of The Year Award and the @wsl Impact Award were dreams come true. I wanted to share an excerpt from my speech recognizing those who impacted me in ways they might not even have realized: “John John Florence gave me $500 for having the best grades while I was competing in NSSA. That was my very first paycheck in surfing. Honestly, it wasn’t even about the money… it was getting to meet John personally that made that moment so meaningful. Carissa Moore—I’ll never forget being invited to your Moore Aloha Girls Camp. That experience meant so much to me and helped shape my love for both the sport and the community around it. You showed me that greatness isn’t just about performance—it’s about how you lift others up. Stephanie Gilmore—I was so nervous to say hi to you the first time I saw you in Maui. But you were so friendly and genuine, and you showed me that taking a moment to be kind and present can leave a lasting impression. Italo Ferreira—I posted a video of a barrel when I was 12 years old. You didn’t know me, but you shared it on your Instagram and even sent me a direct message. That encouragement meant more to me than you could imagine. You showed me that encouragement doesn’t have to be big to be powerful—a simple message can go a long way. And Lakey Peterson—your character and kindness showed in one of your toughest moments. I watched you lose a heat that ended your title run and Olympic hopes. You came out of the water, saw me, and said, “You’re the little girl out here every morning, aren’t you?” I said yes… and you handed me your board and said, “I want you to have this.” That board was too big for me then—and it’s probably still too big for me now—but it will always have a place in my boardroom. I’ll never forget that moment, and you’re the reason I now give boards away to young surfers every year.
