I had the honor of marching with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Michael Moore at the protest against George W. Bush and the U.S. War in Iraq outside the 2004 Republican National Convention, two months after “Fahrenheit 9/11” came out. I also got to meet him four years later inside the Republic Windows and Doors factory occupation, where I was holed up for six days filming a scene for “Capitalism: A Love Story.” Rev. Jackson showed up with his Rainbow PUSH Coalition to personally deliver food to the workers who were fighting for their severance. They were ultimately victorious, thanks, in part, to the Rev. So many great and comforting memories, some of them surprising at the time. I specifically remember tears of laughter streaming down Sylvia’s face when she asked me what my friend’s dad did for a living and I told her he was a protractor (he was actually a chiropractor). And I remember Grandma Syd coming into my room when we lost our childhood dog, Penny, and telling me she knew how hard it was but that it would get easier. Thank you, grandmas, for all you have done for me! I think of you both often and your memory is a blessing. ❤️❤️

After Hurricane Melissa, Jamaicans are still struggling to pick up the pieces and put their lives back together and will be for some time. We lost a real hero yesterday. Ward Reilly was part of the active-duty GI Resistance to the U.S. war in Vietnam, and after he was through with his service, he continued to fight for his country. One of the kindest people I ever met, during our Hurricane Katrina relief effort in New Orleans, Ward offered his house in Baton Rouge as a receiving depot for care packages sent from around the world in response to Michael Moore’s appeal for help (the second shot is a picture of Ward’s driveway at the time). A true antiwar activist, Ward was involved in numerous peace groups and movements and always looked out for his fellow humans.
