Meeting Larry McDonald @dundus backstage at @ozorafestivalofficial this year is perhaps one of my favourite touring memories and definitely amongst the most inspiring musical meetings I’ve ever been blessed with. He was playing later at the same stage with @subatomic and we were sharing backstage for sometime. I’m very ignorant, so I had no idea who he was. But I immediately felt like I was in the presence of somebody special. We hit it off and that night after I put @noorbenju and D to bed, I went back to the festival to hear him play and hoping to hang with him. By this time I had also done some basic research and learnt that he is one of the most important percussionists and definitely among the top conga players in Reggae and Ska history, as well as many other genres and music scenes. 25 years as @gilscottheron main percussionist as well as long time collaborator of @leescratchperry.art he’s also credited on @bobmarley Songs of Freedom. I can’t possibly write anything that would encapsulate the monster of a musical career he’s had. Please google him for that. But his gentle humorous spirit, swag, storytelling, and the energy and zest that he still has for life and music at 88 blew my mind, and Noor’s too. The question is, will I meet Larry in New York again today?
