Got to take one of my favorite BMX trips last week, that I’ve enjoyed since 2017. Packed my bikes and road tripped it to Louisiana for the USABMX Cajun Nationals. Kicked off my consecutive race season number 52 with a stop at the USABMX So Cal Nationals. The three day event was again held at the beautiful Industry Expo Center in City of Industry, CA. This place is amazing. Beautiful facility, great dirt, with a great racing track. We had weather that not even money could buy. It was such a beautiful weekend. I was fortunate to be named the Grand Marshal of the event. What an honor that was. They treated me like royalty. My pictures were on the event, posters, the event program, and even on the event T-shirts, hats, and hoodies. It was so cool that I almost forgot about the racing part. 😛 Any time you can finish a three day race weekend with no bumps, bruises or scrapes, it was a good weekend. I’m just blessed, happy and honored to still be out there competing. It’s so much fun and I’m still having a great time at age 62. A big shout out and thank you to Newell Ruggles for making all of this happen. In 1984 BMX Plus! magazine did an advertisement for subscribing to their magazine. It was a two page color ad. Back then, that was pretty friggin cool to be in it. John Ker, BMX Plus! editor and photographer, took this picture of us during the NBL national at Devonshire downs. As this year comes to an end, I wanna say goodbye to a great man. I met Bernie back in the 80’s when he took over the ABA. He and his son B.A., along with Clayton John took the American Bicycle Association to the next level. And over the years he was instrumental in continuing to take it to new heights. I’m thankful for you, Bernie and your love for this sport, and all that participate in it. Thank you for giving us a place to race and your endless efforts to make the BMX racing experience better and better. You did a great job and you will truly be missed. Rest in peace my friend. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite events every year. Each time they’ve held the Grand Nationals here in Tulsa, I have competed. That’s 29 different times.
