Happy Birthday to Poppa Joe Maneri! We miss his earthly presence so much. Joe had one foot in this world and the other in the spirit realm, and this clip from the Knitting Factory 4-20-00 is a good example. No doubt he & Brahim are jamming together in the stars, and that’s some deeep shit right there.

Except that, when I really sit and think about all the phone calls I couldn’t make to you at critical junctions in my life, it also makes complete sense. We live in an unfair world. We bear witness to that fact every single day (you would be livid with the state of things, trust me). And yet, the gravest injustice is that you aren’t here.
But you are. And I’m not here to debate signs from the hereafter or the meticulously-placed Imperial truck on a monumental day. It is that Jess and I carry you with us every moment. You illustrated through action how to present ourselves in a confusing world. How to love through anger. How, when things feel upside down, to hold the most important people closest. And we do.
