Toot toot beep deep divas, Tomorrow maybe opens Saturday at 53 Orchard. Reconstruction always risks collapse. Jordan Corine Cruz, Alison Kuo, and Aidan McLellan each oscillate around Tomorrow maybe’s heart: looking backward to consider our inherited voices and believing in the eventually. Cruz remolds and reroutes domestic narratives; Kuo deitizes accumulation, threading idols of past into the present; McLellan rewards play and delays breakdown. Together grasping intangible visions to build approximations. The afterglow of yesterday upon us. Tomorrow maybe is curated by Zakariya Abdul-Qadir & Eric Geithner. See you Saturday @zakariyaa.qadir @ericgeithner @at._.km @kuoskies @jordancorinec

'Friendly turned scary', oil paint, on linen, handmade pine support, 28 x 30 inches, 2021 There was this friendly figure in a dream I had. We developed a rapport over some banter. In the world of the dream I think we were working together toward some sort of goal. Suddenly, this figure revealed a new face and turned menacing. I woke up with a start. 'Chuchotage', oil paint, marble dust, on linen, handmade pine support, 19 x 15 inches, 2022 I encountered the term "chuchotage" at a University of Vermont orientation. We were talking about the distinction between translation and interpretation—translation as written and interpretation as spoken. (The medium is the message! Marshall McLuhan forever.) Per the Accredited Language Services Blog: "Chuchotage [French for whispering] is a form of interpreting where the linguist stands or sits alongside a small target audience and whispers a simultaneous interpretation of what's being said." Real-time interpretation. This painting was made in Virginia and Vermont. Caught between shifting contexts and landscapes. The Blue Ridge Mountains to the Green Mountains. Inflected with whispers. Interpretation with lags and glitches and Sontagian distortions. Photo by Federico Savini @1888fsavini #ericgeithner

'Feeling their oats', oil paint, marble dust, on linen, handmade poplar support, 24.25 x 18 inches, 2021 My memory is that J. P. Ascher and I were driving west on Main Street. I think we had just seen Neal Rock’s show ‘Flesh Poems’ and were headed back to the studio. J. P. looked out the car window toward some undergrads and wistfully observed, “feeling their oats!” I like learning vernacular idioms—the experience always reminds me of giddily identifying my mom’s Southern phrases growing up. 'Use your words', oil paint, marble dust, on linen, handmade pine support, 24.25 x 18 inches, 2021 Now that Milo's a toddler, I've been saying this often. Owen gets a pass, for now. In 2021, we didn't have kids yet--I learned the phrase from Elise directing it toward me. 🤔 Photo by Federico Savini @1888fsavini #ericgeithner #elisegeithner #milogeithner #owengeithner
