May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Equal Voice, we think it’s important to state the obvious: political life is hard, and for women and gender-diverse individuals, it can be even harder.
This month, we’re raising awareness of the mental health challenges facing women and gender-diverse individuals in politics.
Because building stronger networks and communities, and addressing the current realities of governing, matters. And we need your support to make it happen.

The path to equal representation was built by pioneers.
Women who challenged barriers, stepped into leadership, and helped change the course of politics in Canada.
Their legacy continues to shape the future.
Here is their story.

Meet the newest faces joining the Equal Voice team this summer ☀️
We’re excited to welcome Gia, our new Administrative Coordinator, and Dakota, our new Programs Coordinator who were both hired through the Canada Summer Jobs program!
Gia recently completed an Honours BA in Social Justice and Peace Studies and Political Science at Western University, and this fall she will begin her master’s in urban development at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is passionate about community-driven work and activism that promotes equality in workplaces and politics.
Dakota holds an Honours BA in Politics and Governance from Toronto Metropolitan University and is currently completing her Master of Arts in Gender and Politics at Queen's University, before beginning her PhD in Gender and Diversity at Carleton University this fall. She aims to advance research in political media, intersectional barriers to entering and serving in office, and diverse representation.
Welcome to the team, Gia and Dakota!
On April 23, 2026, Equal Voice Interim Executive Director, @lindsaybrumwell , testified before Parliament on civic resilience in Canada.
Our research shows less than half of Canadians believe there are real opportunities to get involved in politics, and 8 in 10 say politics is not welcoming to newcomers.
Lindsay called on the committee to act because the opportunity is there. 58 per cent of women are interested in getting involved at the municipal level. What is needed are the programs, supports, and evidence-based policy to meet it.
This is the work Equal Voice was built for. Because, it really matters.

This Mother’s Day, Equal Voice is honouring the mothers who raise children and our democracy.
Sheila Copps. Christy Clark. Sania Hassainia. Karina Gould. Christine Mitas. Nicole Sarauer. Megan Mitton. Lane Tredger. And so many, many more.
From city council to the House, mothers didn’t just enter Canadian politics, they changed it.
And the work is far from finished.
Support Equal Voice this Mother’s Day. It really matters.

Twenty-five years ago this week, Equal Voice was founded with one mission: to elect more women to all levels of political office in Canada 🇨🇦
On May 6, 2026, one of our founding members, Senator Donna Dasko, rose in the Senate of Canada to mark this milestone anniversary, reflecting on the work that brought us here and recommitting to the work still ahead.
Our national research shows less than half of Canadians believe there are real opportunities to get involved in politics, and 8 in 10 say it’s not welcoming to newcomers.
Equal Voice was built to change that. Because, it really matters.

Earlier this month, Equal Voice’s Interim Executive Director @lindsaybrumwell joined the Cheers to Change: Women in Politics panel hosted by Political Advocacy Through Her (P.A.T.H.) @pathusask at the University of Saskatchewan @usask .
P.A.T.H. is a university student-led group creating space for women and gender-diverse students to engage in political dialogue and leadership; exactly the kind of early engagement that builds the next generation.
Lindsay joined students, @cityofsaskatoon ’s hollyk_yxe and Professor Maggie FitzGerald from the University of Saskatchewan to discuss the value of having more women and gender-diverse individuals stepping into political life and being at decision-making tables. Grassroots engagement like this really matters.

We wrapped up our 2026 Spring National and Indigenous Campaign Schools with a record number of participants!
We want to showcase our amazing speakers and volunteers who brought a wealth of experience and expertise to every session.
Women and gender diverse leaders remain underrepresented in Canadian politics, at all levels of government, and that does not change without intentional work like this.
If you have been thinking about getting involved, there’s a place for you here. Sign up for our e-newsletter at the link in our bio to learn more as we begin planning our fall cohort. Because it really matters.
