Announcing our Call for Scores Winners! Robert Humber’s work “breath shapes” for violin, viola and piano will be featured on our upcoming debut album ❤️🎶 Robert Humber is a Canadian composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, producer and educator. In May 2019, he graduated with a Master's Degree in Music Composition at University of British Columbia where he studied with Jocelyn Morlock, Stephen Chatman, Dorothy Chang and Keith Hamel. In 2017, he completed a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he studied with Andrew Staniland and Clark Ross. He has written and performed music for concert halls, films, dance, video games and interactive sound installations, and has several upcoming recordings of his pieces. Recently, his 6-piano piece “murmurations” was named runner-up in Open Ears Festival’s 2022 competition. A growing interest in the intersection between music and other artistic disciplines has led to such collaborations as Fire Kedgy’s Howl, a dance collaboration with Hilary Knee and Neighbourhood Dance Works premiered in August 2022. He is currently composing a 25-minute dance piece/visual EP called sea shell in collaboration with pianist Stephen Eckert, dancer Hilary Knee and videographer Giancarlo Delgado Aspiazu. Robert currently lives in downtown Calgary with his fiancé Jessica and dog Beans. The first of two winners is Jessy Lindsay with her set of three comedic songs “Oupelaï”, which will be featured on our upcoming debut album ❤️🎶 Jessy Lindsay is a Franco-Ontarian composer and singer-songwriter that loves to bring personal and relatable stories to life in her music. She recently finished her Bachelor of Music in voice and composition at the University of Ottawa, studying most recently with Professor Frédéric Lacroix. Her passion for writing lyrics brings a unique narrative and emotional dimension to her works. The various genres Jessy explores as an indie-pop singer-songwriter and classical contemporary composer inspire a refreshing creative identity. Jessy has been awarded the Classical Music Composition Beaudry Somcynsky Prize for her excellence and promise in the field. Hello friends and new music makers! Ensemble Allure is searching for pieces to record for our debut album this spring. We’re inviting composers to submit pre-composed, non-commissioned works for ensembles of 3+ instruments containing combinations of the following: Guitar / ukulele (1) Piano (1) Soprano voice (1) Viola / violin (1) Violin / electric violin / mandolin (1) Optional: limited common auxiliary percussion (1) Please send messages / scores to [email protected] with your name, pronouns, instrumentation, description of the work, and a declaration of your affiliation with one of the marginalized/underrepresented groups below should you identify as such. DEADLINE: Saturday, May 20th, 2023. Our ensemble's official mandate indicates our commitment to performing music by marginalized and/or underrepresented Canadian composers. As such, our debut album will reflect this cornerstone policy: - Over 60% of the album will feature music composed by Canadian BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, Francophone, New Generation (under 30), and/or Indigenous composers - Scores for unspecified instruments and/or aleatoric music are welcome, as are pieces with simple electronics or tape. - Performers are open to extended techniques, ‘prepared’ instruments, and are comfortable with improvisation.
