#GreifGuestRoom: This edition has been curated by award-winning author and Harvard professor Sarah Lewis (@sarahelizabethlewis1 ) and photography historian Jessica Stark (@jessicawilliamsstark ), on the theme:
„When They See Us“ 👁️
The title honors filmmaker Ava DuVernay and curator Koyo Kouoh. DuVernay’s miniseries „When They See Us“ revealed the crisis of misrecognition surrounding the now-exonerated Central Park Five. Kouoh’s exhibition „When We See Us“ shifted the gaze from they to we, affirming the political and cultural power of Black joy, self-definition, and presence.
📍Selection 9:
⚡️Enrique Escandell (@enriqueescandell )
⚡️Kendall Gilliam (@po.key )
Enrique Escandell started writing graffiti at age 11 and without realizing it, taking pictures of his graffiti pieces, he started his passion for photography. He studied Computer Science at the Polytechnic University of Valencia but after a few years as a systems engineer he chose to study Art Photography at the EASD. As soon as he finished, he won a scholarship at the Lens School to take a master’s degree in fine photography and move to Madrid. Once finished the studies, he starts working as a photographer, combining commissions with the development of personal projects.
Kendall Gilliam is a phrecognizesartist whose work focuses on examining the layered issues associated with the complexity of intersectional identity. Gilliam’s work celebrates and recognizes a fundamental need to explore intersectional identity, elevate invisible communities and reclaim cultural narratives from the status quo. Through his work, he fulfills his desire to dissect society’s fetishization of marginalized subcultures via photography.
