For the creation of “Whirly Loops”, our team The Algorithmic Gaze was inspired by “Bow Echo” by @azizhazara , where five young boys climb a mountain on which they then play the kazoo in strong winds. In dialogue with this work, we designed five “whirly tubes” controlled by motors that turn based on visitor’s movements. Creating an evolving sonic experience, the generated wind answers back to Hazara’s “Bow Echo”.  The installation can be seen at @smakgent , and will be running between the 1st of April and the 3rd of May 2026. Be sure to pass by in the upcoming month to experience the installation yourself!

At the beginning of March, the research team I’m part of welcomed guests from the @aisecrett_eu consortium for a two-day machine learning workshop at our campus @sintlucasantwerpen . The meeting brought together researchers and artists to explore how machine learning can be used as a creative tool. Participants trained custom image models and learned how to make them interactive. The hands-on workshop was part of an ongoing international collaboration between art and design institutions investigating the role of artificial intelligence in creative practices.   Check the link below to learn more about it: https://aisecrett.eu/aisecrett-workshop-antwerp-machine-learning/ Thank you to all the participants and their institutions for being so receptive to engage with our creative tools. @esad_grenoble_valence @ecoleartsdecoparis @ensadlab @sonycsl_paris @econcult.uv @universitatvalencia KEA European Affairs The Lisbon Council As always, special thanks to @sintlucasantwerpen and @_slarg_ for your unconditional support. 📸 @paurausell (1, 4), @enigmeta (2-3, 5) and @celiatortpujol (6-12) March 2026

Last February, our research project brought us to Brno, Czech Republic. There we shared the work “Assume calibration pose: this breath isn’t mine”, which has already been presented in Barcelona, Antwerp and Tallinn. Every time we perform it we adjust the piece to the current status of the research, allowing ourselves to discover new elements and perspectives of the work that we would not encounter otherwise. In Brno, we performed in the context of the Theatre Conference JAMU, organised by the Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Performing Arts. The conference was about “ANALOGUE vs. DIGITAL HUMAN feat. ART”. Thank you, @df_jamu , for hosting us and organise such a good event. And special thanks to @nataliekulina for sharing the best bistros and cafés in Brno. Last but not least, thank you to all the institutions who are supporting this journey: @festivalmixtur , @centredartssantamonica , @_slarg_ , @sintlucasantwerpen , @aeconservatoires , @emta_ee , @ciemess , @elle.s.g , @michaellazicmess , @df_jamu and @ipn_brno . 📸 Petra Čumíčková (1-7), Johana Sedláková, Jáchym Kolář (8-10), @enigmeta (11) February 2026

We performed “Assume calibration pose: this breath isn’t mine” again. The piece was in dialogue with “Punktum” by @ciemess in a double bill night. Thank you @elle.s.g and @michaellazicmess for hosting the event. Each time we show our work is an opportunity to share the insights of the research project and its ongoing questions. For this occasion, we integrated the reflections we wrote for an article into the original piece. Willing to know more about the research? This is how our two-day workshop on AI in motion looked like. We invited the participants to bring awareness to the embodied aspects of their artistic work and explore how technology can reveal new dimensions of their practice that might otherwise remain invisible. It was part of the @_slarg_ Research Week, which always brings fresh ideas and new connections. Thanks you @annemarleen , @efoulious , @keremkaysadi , @lucaliquido , @lucas_delarubia , @mariia.vlk , @nick__horemans , Nore Kerkhofs and @q1ko.space for jumping into the workshop with such a positive attitude from the very beginning. And thank you @sintlucasantwerpen for being, once more, so supportive and cooperative. Special thanks to @enigmeta , @myrthebokelmann and Lieven Menschaert, the members of our beloved research group the “Algorithmic Gaze”. Did you subscribe to our newsletter? Second edition of RAIVE AI Summer School, a laboratory for artists from diverse disciplines such as dance, music, technology and visual arts. RAIVE was born from the desire to offer a space for artists to meet and work collaboratively with performative arts and technology.

The summer school is a collaboration between two research groups based in Antwerp and working on performative arts, technology and AI: “The Algorithmic Gaze” and @creatie.research . Thank you @_slarg_ and @research_conservatoireantwerp for your unconditional support. RAIVE is based on the experience we had in August 2021 with @myrthebokelmann during the summer school LAbO organised by @champdaction_ . We are very happy to provide a similar experience to a new generation of artists.

A special acknowledgement to the generosity of the coaches who guided the explorations: Fran Vincent, @giusycarusopianist_researcher , @enigmeta , @umutreldem and Lieven Menschaert. And also to the commitment and openness of the participants: @agustinmaestre_ , Ankie Klut, @annemarleen , @paola_paulis , @christian_johannes_ , Daniil Hetman, Francesco Campora and @starblindearthbound . We wish you lots of luck in your future discoveries!

Exploring dance through AI — our first experiments training custom neural networks on motion-captured movement; exploring the intersection of human motion and machine learning. The visualization shows how AI interprets and then predicts human movement, shown as flowing trails of joint positions. Part of the "Strange Loops" research project, examining the recursive relationship between human movement, digital mediation, and AI interpretation. “Assume calibration pose: this breath isn’t mine”. Two creatures whose movements and behaviours are shaped by technological systems that guide them. Sensors in the motion capture suit worn by the dancer transmit her movements to the oboist, who responds through a custom-built vibrating glove that translates the dancer’s motions into musical responses. Performed in the opening of the @_slarg_ Research Week with @myrthebokelmann ; Lieven Menschaert on the hardware design and @enigmeta in charge of the software development. A project created in the context of our research group The Algorithmic Gaze. Check it out! /collaborations/assume-calibration-pose/ Thank you @sintlucasantwerpen and @_slarg_ for the invitation and support. From January on, the research will continue for two years, and we are very excited. October 2024 📸 @danialshah_ (1-6), @bringulda (7), @enigmeta (8-10), @celiatortpujol (11-12)
