Calling all DMV musicians! This Thursday 5/14 will be our last @dcmodularsociety Sonic Frontiers Jam Session in our spring series at @brentwoodarts inside the @gatewayartscenter The final theme for the season will be a discussion on looping, different perspectives on what constitutes an actual “loop,” and different ways to implement and/or improve upon your use loops! ***As always, all instruments welcome! Any folks wanting to bring electro-acoustic instruments (or vocals) are able to still be connected to the mixer set-up and/or can also be processed through some of our modular systems to create a whole new world of sound from your instrument you may have never been able to make before!*** Following the discussion, we will have some guided jams/prompts to practice some of the discussed concepts. FREE entry for anyone bringing an instrument to participate in the jam and $20 entry to Brentwood for anyone coming to just attend the seminar, listen in, and peruse the gallery. It’s that time again folks! This Sunday, April 26th, we will have our monthly meet-up at @rhizome_dc 12pm-4pm, suggested donation of $5-$10 to Rhizome for use of the space. Modular is a mindset, and all are welcome! 🤓🤗 As always, we are open to any electronic music adjacent instruments, but also no gear or experience is required—just interest! It’s also a great time to come with specific modular questions or potential problems you may be bumping into, and we are happy to try and help! 🤗 Our first hour or so will be set-up and modular mingling. We will be kicking off our demos with some patch presentations from last Sunday’s Neptune performers, so folks can see how the cable spaghetti is made! Established musicians such as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Morton Subotnick, Carl Craig and John Foxx show off their systems and explain why they opt to use this volatile but ultimately rewarding technology. We are really looking forward to this month’s Sonic Frontiers Jam Session at @brentwoodarts inside the @gatewayartscenter Thursday 3/19 from 7pm-9pm! In honor of Élaine Radigue who passed away on February 23rd and was one of the highlighted artists from our screening of @sisterswithtransistors at last month’s session, we will have a drone/texture focused seminar to start and jam after to practice implementing techniques from our discussion. We will also be experimenting with a “patch roulette” style jam which will be a sort of cooperative round table to create an evolving and shifting piece. ***As always, all instruments welcome! Any folks wanting to bring electro-acoustic instruments (or vocals) are able to still be connected to the mixer set-up and/or can also be processed through some of our modular systems to create a whole new world of sound from your instrument you may have never been able to make before!*** Radigue was a French composer first beginning her work in the 1950s and by the late 60s had adopted the ARP 2500 as her primary instrument while blazing a trail for future ambient artists with her long form drone-based compositions that focused on subtle but continually evolving sounds, textures, and harmonic relationships. She is also the focus of the closing scene of Sisters with Transistors, which is arguably one of the most intimate, powerful, and heartwarming scenes of the documentary. No cover! 💸 Last month, @ali.the.architect @stukesm4 and @nullphiinfinity closed out 2025 with a series of awesome sets all backdropped with a visual adventure provided by @wetsoulmusic ! This month to ring in the new year we are going to be taken on a sonic journey powered by @sonocurrent @minimaloscillations and @nick.fleisher with @shiftr.vz providing the ocular assistance! We are really proud of how 2025’s showcase series turned and so thankful for everyone who took part, both participants and audience alike! 💜 Each year we aim to not grow the pool of artists who participate as well the audience that appreciate them, but we also work to continue to grow our DCMS community and improve as organizers too. Really looking forward to our December Sonic Frontiers Jam Session this Thursday 12/11 at @brentwoodarts inside the @gatewayartscenter lead by Matthew Cha (@saxmachine1234 ) and the @dcmodularsociety ! —7pm-9pm —FREE for participants bringing their own instrument —$20 for audience members who want to just listen in on the seminar/session, view the art gallery, participate in the swap —All instruments/musical backgrounds welcomed and encouraged! *December’s Theme* This month’s facilitated discussion/seminar will be arpeggios, and demonstrating all the different ways one can create them on various instruments and use them in both jamming and compositional contexts to create interesting melodies and/or stretch out a musical phrase. Our first structured jam of the evening will be based around this concept and allow participants an opportunity to try out the discussed techniques! As always, a few different synths and/or modular systems will be set-up to allow any curious audience member to try their hand at jamming along with a simple patch! For any electro-acoustic participants, we will have the capabilities to also sample your instrument, process it through our systems, and let you hear it like you may never have before! *Swap table for music/audio gear* —both audience members/participants encouraged to bring any equipment or instruments they’re interested in trading *Feedback and Improvements* We have really appreciated all the folks turning out to these events and helping make them such a fun experience! Each month’s session has allowed us to iterate on different ways to keep making the event as accessible and engaging as possible for both audience and participants alike. This month is no exception! :sunglasses: In addition to access to the guided jam session and art gallery, there will now also be: 1.
