Join us this Saturday for the last event from our programming year - a journey with @travess by minecart to world border, which is the outer extreme of Minecraft's procedurally-generated terrain. As always, this will be livestreamed on the Mackenzie Art Gallery's twitch channel, instagram, and facebook pages!
Some pics from our opening of Chance Language Resource Pack by Travels Smalley (@travess ) in Nov - we had some downtime as a result of the java log4j bug, but we have upgraded the server and are extending the exhibition until the end of the month!
Exhibiting Minecraft artist-in-residence Travess Smalley will discuss generative artmaking in the game, and its wider artistic applications. The ability to generate new meanings or iterations of an artwork is one of the primary appeals of digital media, and interactive platforms like Minecraft are good places for artists and audiences to explore generative practices. Travess will take us on a tour of his own intervention within the game, “Minecraft Language Edition,” as well as the past and present of generative art history that influences his practice. Through an engaging performative lecture, the audience will learn about this important aspect of digital artmaking within the game of Minecraft and the wider digital art world.
The performance will be livestreamed to the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s social media, including its Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch accounts, which are viewable without a Minecraft account.

During his residency, Smalley has been developing a texture pack where the images and textures present in the game are replaced with randomly generated language. The result is a surreal reading experience, reminiscent of a concrete poem, that turns the familiar Minecraft world into an abstract, austere, and newly dangerous place (be careful identifying lava!). As a companion to the exhibition, Smalley will also be releasing the full resource pack for at-home players as well
