This installation by Swiss collective @encor_studio explores how light shapes our sense of space. Part of the Adsum series, it reflects on being present. Glass panels coated with liquid crystal films shift between transparency and opacity as light changes. This shifting reality connects to ideas from quantum physics, where particles only take on a clear state when observed.
You can visit the installation Adsum Exp at MU as part of Explorations of Uncertainty, artists’ visions on quantum until March 22.

Encor Studio Deals with memories that surface so quickly that you almost miss them. Fractions of a second that feel like a punch in the gut—or like a hug.
For example, a narrow strip of light sliding across concrete, and suddenly you’re back in another summer. Or a perfume in a crowd, and immediately the past is sitting next to you, closer than anyone else at that moment.
These are fleeting milliseconds that are powerful enough to tear open entire rooms of memory.
Encor’s works reveal and conceal at the same time. Everything blurs, everything sharpens. That’s how memory works: first foggy, then razor sharp like a photograph. A brief moment that immediately slips away again.
And yet it doesn’t just remain in the mind – it remains in the body. As a shiver, as warmth, and as a question.
The work was shown for the first time last year at Art Basel and is now coming to Berlin.

Sit and gaze at the glass window, constantly reshaped by light. The world outside fades in and out of focus, appearing only vaguely.
“ALCOVE IN SITU” by Encor Studio delves into the subtle relationship between “presence” and “absence,” prompting us to consider: does the unseen hold more weight than the seen?
Through shifting light and shadow, the work simulates how memories are unbidden reawakened. There are no physical objects, because the most profound memories often exist only in our senses and the traces left behind.
