Moody Bare Throated Tiger Heron
Here, there was no garbage. Exploring the grounds away from the (completely sustainable, eco friendly, and off the grid) lodges, I had a sense of how Belizean wildlife really was without the touch of humanity. A great example of things that some places/people are doing right.
Maybe my generation, and the ones to follow, might just have a chance.

Magnificent Frigatebirds
Birding in Caye Caulker, like many places, has its ups and downs. Unique scenes, beautiful birds, and great encounters were abundant, though unfortunately I happened to notice the negatives as well. As I watched least sandpipers and ruddy turnstones forage, I noticed great amounts garbage was intertwined with the sargassum washed up ashore. Driving the golf cart to a supposedly secluded part of the island, proved to have more traces of people than I imagined. Trash. Mangroves riddled with it, heaping piles of it mixed with seaweed, dumps behind new residential areas. All of it slowly becoming a part of the lives of the nature surrounding it. How can such a beautiful place, with such a lack of people can be so heavily affected by us. How destructive can we be. Let alone the wildlife being affected directly, we ourselves suffer from the consequences of pollution. Microplastics have even been found in placenta, a clear display of how our actions, and same with generations past have ignored responsibility. This ignorance may ruin futures before they even have the chance to begin. We must take responsibility. When will we take the hint?

Urban Clay Coloured Thrush
Wandering the park right outside of my hotel in Cayo Belize searching for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls, I stumbled across this thrush foraging through trash left on these stairs. I am intrigued as to how wildlife can adapt so quickly, learning how to survive while a destructive species takes over their habitat.
We are that destructive species. Society as a collective seems to be unable to make real changes as the climate clock ticks, with irreversible damage creeping closer and closer. I wonder, when will we make a change?

High Key Brown Pelican
During my last full day in Caye Caulker, I found this adorable pelican perched a top a sign, and noticed the perfect opportunity to work out a cool high key. I waited for the right moment, and as this fellow opened its mouth I seized the moment, with this being the result.

Eastern Raccoon
A shot from a beautiful warm summers evening this past August. After a beautiful day birding, a friend and I stumbled across this family of raccoons feeding on the remains of what the birds had left behind of their feed.

ICM Bare Throated Tiger Heron
During my last morning at black rock lodge, I continued with my usual routine of going down to a spot by the river early in the morning for sunrise. I sat on a ledge, my feet dangling above the rushing water below when i noticed this stunning bird watching over the torrent. I observed this individual wait patiently for its next meal to appear, and I was able to explore with different shots of it during the meantime. I hope you enjoy this creative expression.

Cuban Emerald
Cuban wildlife never ceases to amaze me, and i often reflect on how disheartening it is to know that the very same animal populations I adore will diminish. As i say this, that also makes me realize just how privileged I am to be negatively affected by future likelihoods of animals disappearing, meanwhile millions of cubans suffer due to the crisis in Cuba right now. I am blessed enough to lose a vacation spot, while Cubans suffer losing their homes and loved ones, let alone losing basic human rights as simple as water access.
I dream for changes to be made, and this is a “dream” that must come true.

saw whet banding series pt 2
somehow an even better night than the first, being the second best night of the season, and being the first time that @megannpittman and i were able to band these gorgeous owls. I learnt so much, and while i didn’t think becoming more passionate about avians was possible, this experience proved otherwise. Yet again, a huge thank you to @sarahs.nature.log aswell as @alex_prieditis for the incredible night !!

saw whet banding series
a truly inspiring night with saw whets, with it being my first encounter with them, and first time witnessing banding. I was given incredible opportunities, from carrying the “bird bag”, photographing the night itself, all the way to releasing a stunning individual. For the longest time, i’ve been torn between leaning towards the medical field versus the wildlife field, after this night (especially observing and hearing Sarah), i’m sure which way i want my future to head. Thank you so much to @sarahs.nature.log , @alex_prieditis , @andys_avians , @fox101_wildlife , and @norikaa.y for making the night so memorable.
