HOLY SHIT "Nietfeld’s gifts for capturing the fury of living at the mercy of bad circumstances, for critiquing the hero’s journey even while she tells it, make ACCEPTANCE a remarkable memoir." "As soon as my complaint with H.R. was filed, Google went from being a great workplace to bring any other company: It would protect itself first." Stunned and grateful to be in the @nytimes . I'm so grateful to the editors at the times for letting me tell my story about my love affair with my former employer, the harassment I faced there, and how "great workplaces" can be awful places to report mistreatment. Thank you so much @kholoodeid for the amazing photos. Link in bio.

What happens when we reject recovery as a redemption arc and release the pressure to turn pain into proof of worth? We dipped into the archives to bring you this never-released episode. Author, speaker, advocate, and young woman in recovery, Emi Nietfeld, joins Dr. Tiffany Wynn to challenge the cultural narratives that equate suffering with strength and healing with achievement. Together, Emi and Tiffany unpack the myths of toxic resilience culture, including the expectation that trauma survivors package their pain into inspirational narratives. 🎧 Listen now Available wherever you get your podcasts or follow the link in the comments/bio for more info. #SHERECOVERS #SHERECOVERSPodcast #RecoveryPodcast #RecoveryCommunity #RecoveringOutLoud #WeAreAllRecoveringFromSomething #WeDoRecover

🎅🏾 Step aside, Santa: This Year Scrooge is Driving the Sleigh! 🎄 My latest for @thecut about #RichToks no-gift trend got surprisingly historical - and political. It took me into "feminine energy"/homesteading/homeschooling Instagram as well as into brownstone Brooklyn. (And, yes, it did inspire me to purge my house of toys and craft a homemade advent calendar out of string, binder clips, and index cards...) Link in bio. Huge thanks to my legendary editor helloitsmarisa who had this great idea and to my sources @apriljacksonofficial , @michaeleen.doucleff , @hifamlife , and more. Ya'll blew my mind! #christmas #kids #giftsforkids #formykids #christmasgiftideasforkids #whatigotmykidsforchristmas

@maddiemcgarvey spent 15 years photographing a young girl growing up in the natural splendor and deep poverty of Appalachia. McGarvey's act of witness is breathtaking and heartbreaking and life-changing. I'm honored to write about it for the New York Times, as well as the witness who changed my life simply by being present and refusing to look away. Who has served as a witness for you? Cindy Bi is not supposed to be telling me this story. When her son died in utero, a venture capitalist went to extremes to punish her surrogate. Or, as she puts it, to "seek justice." Private investigators. Psychics. Calls to the FBI. Dozens of reports to regulators. A lawsuit. An influencer fertility doctor. A restraining order. An arrest warrant. American surrogacy is an enormous industry, taking in approximately $5 billion in 2024, and the practice is expected to explode globally almost tenfold in the next decade. A shocking number of techies now believe growing a baby can be a straightforward business transaction. But intended parents and gestational carriers are often uninformed about the dearth of regulation and completely unprepared for what can go wrong. Stories like Cindy's and her surrogates are probably far more common than you'd ever imagine, but they usually unfold in secret. Not this one.
