COVER REVEAL with @mingreads_ !!! I am overjoyed to share the cover for Foreigners, aka my next book, aka my first historical novel, aka the book that was the hardest for me to write and also the story I am the proudest of.
This book is about secrets, lies, love, agency, politics, trauma, and family ties. It is also about my family—over the course of many years, my grandmother let me record her life story. I learned so much about her immigration to America as well as her New York City whirlwind summer romance with my grandfather (!). Her tale provided the seeds for this book, and while it’s taken on a life of its own, it would not have come to fruition without her.
And speaking of family, this book is also in many ways about my great-great-great grandfather, Duanfang, whose earth-shattering, very real secret changed the trajectory of my family’s life, and of my main characters’ lives.
The brilliant @manshenlo and @notchriskwon took all this inspiration and context and created the cover of my dreams. I feel extremely lucky and privileged to have such a powerhouse (and entirely Asian!!!) team making this book.

My mom is my #1 fan. She has supported my every dream and goal and throughout that journey, she has never once suggested that I be a doctor or have a career in STEM, even though she and my dad were doctors themselves. If you see her in a bookstore, she is probably searching for my novels so she can put them face out on the shelves. And if you know her personally, she’s likely your pseudo second mother, your “Mama Lee,” the person you FaceTime or call when you need advice or just someone to cry to (IYKYK). My sister and I are two lucky girls.
