The Dragon People of Tai Hang
This collection was launched last week as part of the 14th issue of @halftone.photography magazine in Macau. "Time folds here. Three nights each autumn, the streets of a neighborhood of Hong Kong, once a small Hakka village, exhale of incense and sweat as bodies converge in the dark. The creature is built piece by piece, and emerges not as symbol but occurrence - a temporary alignment of muscle memory and fire that manifests when the old calendar demands.
Fingers that type on keyboards all year now plait rice straw with ancestral precision. Teenagers hoist the bamboo spine with the same pelvic tilt their grandfathers used, though no one taught them. The rhythm is in the bones now, unwound from some deeper place with each drumbeat.
Modern details flicker through the ritual: tattooed forearms steadying the frame, sneakers scuffing against century-old footwork patterns. The dance tolerates smartphone glow and traffic hum, metabolizing the present into its structure. Although it all started 140 years ago."
