Muros do Cerco or Walls of the Encirclement (mark 1)
(Pinhole photography)
______________________________________________
“Muros do Cerco” (Walls of the Encirclement) is an interpretation of all the invisible and visible walls that surround and define the small territory of this city/state.
By printing its characters onto the pieces that make this wall, we not only get an experimental medium to present a photograph, but the idea of the many generating the whole. The pieces that make a culture, a
community.
The photographic process used in this project, comprises of long exposure Pinhole street photography, part of the collection “Temporary Bodies”, applied by emulsion liquid on wood blocks that connect with each other.
An iconic landmark of Macao’s history receives an addition to its missing parts.
CONTEXT
Portas do Cerco (or Barrier Gate), defines the line that separated old colonial Macao peninsula from the mainland of China. As an obsolete object of control, this iconic piece is the sole standing part of an entire wall of the old encirclement or siege of the city. Also reminding us of
how it all started, as a small military camp coexisting with a fishing village.

RELEASE THE MASSES!
( Carte de Visite - The Non-Identity Chapter )
———————————————————————————
FACE VALUE
There was a time when your identity was your verbal word on what you were and what you did; afterwords your written name on a piece of paper was enough to represent you. Even later, an intemporal method was applied; the unique tinted fingerprint. Nevertheless, it was the burned silver minerals on a sheet of treated glass that changed the entire way of identifying oneself. Thus, the photograph presented to everyone the real you, undoubtedly.
The face - your face, your identity - is today not only traceable trough cameras but also identified and evaluated with imagined scores by electro-digital systems behind every single lens that capture us daily; an uneasiness dealt by each one of us.
The carte-de-visite was once, during the 1800’s, a way of presenting yourself to others. Your picture on a small piece of cardboard underlined by your name and profession. Simple identification. So next time you could remember that special visitor.
CARTE DE VISITE is an introduction. We from Macau show our selfs; yet unidentifiable.
Present yet Unknown.
After spending around a year roaming around Macau taking daily pictures of people, I exercised a method of capturing random portraits of their back, in a sensible and interesting way, presenting themselves from behind instead of showing their faces. Without invading the subjects privacy, I could collect a large number of bodies, human presence, that can now be accumulated into a presentation and in the shape of a Carte de Visite, they can present them selfs to the public as a synthetic group from Macau, as a single population, the anonymous citizens of the city.

ON EARTH
On an exercise towards my roots, I traveled back to my family’s home town in the north of Portugal and visited the Brazilian Colonial-style house built by my great-great grandfather, who was called “The Tall” or “The Brazilian”, relating to his uncommon height for the time and the misconception that he was born in the Americas, a mith that grew since he spent more time there than Europe.
In the now abandoned potato field I engraved a Greek Cross, where then became a deep path for the connecting boxes to move a long, by human force.

DISPLACING/REPLACING OF A RIVER
In collaboration with artist @carlotatgomes
A tribute to a forgotten river and a reflection on time and space.
The town of Alte, South of Portugal, had one of its main rivers dried from the source by industry. In a simple exercise of memory, we carried through the valley that surrounds the town, our version of a river, who appeared and disappeared in a performance/installation that only the inhabitants and who ever was there on that day could witness.
