As we dive into our second year of residency in Cornwall, we thought it might be a good time to explain that we’re not there every month just for the beaches and cosy pubs! 🍻👀
When we were approached two years ago by the Frost Trust and the MusicAbility Foundation to pilot and subsequently launch a Quartet in Residence position, we had no idea just how important and valuable this project would grow to become. A couple of us (and many of our colleagues) began our musical lives following school assemblies given by our first teachers, and we greatly value the opportunity to now be a part of someone else’s journey.
Since 2024, we have performed and collaborated with 45 different schools across Cornwall, some of them receiving up to four repeat visits as of last month 🌟 For a large number of the students, it’s their first time hearing live classical music; now, there are a handful of Cornish children whose favourite composers are Webern and Bartok! From supporting the Penzance Orchestral Society and Cornwall Youth Orchestra to learning 22 pieces of music for Cornwall’s Golowan Festival last year, we have been afforded the chance to experience so much of the vibrant local music scene already.
This residency, whilst brutally demanding (the 900 miles of driving, playing Haydn for the 22nd time as though it were the first, the early starts and late nights), has established itself as a significant part of our identity as a quartet. It has been a privilege to be able to demonstrate our commitment, love, friendship and music to our growing community in the west.
We can’t write this post without acknowledging Tim and Ruth Boulton, and Emma Stansfield‘s unwavering passion and dedication to Cornwall’s music scene. Before Covid, Cornwall Youth Orchestra held over 100 members, and this year, we were staff supporting 22 young musicians. The revival of music for the youth is never easy, and we are proud to be part of the incredible team of musicians there who are working tirelessly. ❤️
