Since the late 1800s, people have traveled to Ojai in search of healing. When I visited in February for Tās latest Flocking To guide, I was run down by New Yorkās harsh winter and resigned to wearing two layers of pants. Ojai, with its abundant farmersā market and blooming bushes, reminded me that spring would come.
Thank you @debidunn for the dream assignment and always-right edits. Link in bio for all the great localsā recs šš
Third annual Vermont trip with snow storms on either end. In between: maple candies, trail maps, Monaās first ski around the duck pond, and a few roaring fires.
Last year I talked to a few chefs experimenting with affogatos, as well as the food historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi (@historicalitalianfood ), who called the combination āa product of modern hedonismā (aka the original little treat).
I always love sharing a print page because @katsu_fan and @nancyqingwu are creative geniuses who make each story look like a gem nestled in its ideal box.
Thank you to @jennycomita and @kurtsoller for the sharp edits as always šŖŗ gift link in bio!
Finally developed the film from my birthday, when I asked everyone to bring their favorite pastries to the beach. It was my perfect day, even though we couldnāt eat the leftovers because they were covered in sand (I promise I tried). Feeling grateful for everyone who made that morning trek to Rockaway, and for a midwinter portal to the warmth šš„
A major highlight of my year and career: editing @tmagazine ās 25 Essential Pastries to Eat in New York City. I assembled a panel of pastry chefs and bakers who each nominated pastries they love. Then I got to listen in as they debated the definition of pastry and narrowed down their picks. The final list is a testament to the ingenuity and diversity of New Yorkās bakers. I feel so lucky to live here!
Thank you to @kurtsoller for the assignment and advice, @jennycomita for expert top-editing, and the photo team ā @jamie.e.bradley , @studio_bauman , @emilyhlavacgreen ā for ensuring each pastry found its light. See them all at link in bio š
My first time editing a cover story! I feel lucky to have worked with brilliant @emilylordi1 , and to have had @kurtsoller advising me at every step.
I pitched @rizahmed for our Menās issue with a memory of him on the Met Gala red carpet, when he wore an outfit inspired by the immigrant workers of the Gilded Age. He always seems to consider the bigger picture.
Heās achieved serious success, but in some ways this moment feels like a fresh start for him: heās finishing an Amazon series that he wrote, produced and stars in. Heāll soon play the lead in a film version of āHamlet.ā And heās a new father.
āAhmed wants to let more of his life into his work,ā Emily writes, āwhile also bringing the lessons of his craft home. This means, he says, offering his child ā a willful toddler to whom he must sometimes defer ā the same ācollaborative surrenderā he brings to a set. Stories āteach us how to live,ā as he says, not only by affirming who we are but by inviting us to expand.ā

A special week on Galiano Island, where my mom spent some formative years. We got to see the house my grandfather built with stained glass windows and drive the roads heād speed down in his VW bus, late to catch the ferry. Weād heard about Galiano so much growing up that it felt mythic; turns out it really is a place of enchanted forests, wild rocks and sunlit water.
I stopped drinking at the end of 2023, but I didnāt stop seeking out drinks with complex tasting notes!! For Tās Design issue, I wrote about the makers turning foraged ingredients ā like Norwegian meadowsweet and Minnesota white pine ā into intriguing wine alternatives.
