For the third GQ Hype story in this five-part anniversary series commemorating August 4, 2020, we turn to artist and founder of Plastik,
@elirezkallah .
Rezkallah’s surreal, candy-coloured worlds have always reflected a darker Lebanese truth. That joy, in Beirut and beyond, has always existed beside grief.
He was home when the blast hit. “I thought they nuked us,” he says. “I thought everyone was dead.” Almost instantly, he began repeating a single plea to everyone who listened: get me out of here. Within weeks, he was in New York City.
“I decided then and there that I want to leave,” he says. “In that moment, in that manic state of mind.”
Today, he lives a life in between. From New York to Beirut to Dubai and back again, with Plastik continuously tethering him to the city that made him.
