Bernard Essers - Dromen in het duin is vanaf 24 mei 2026 te zien bij Museum Kranenburgh
Dromen in het duin presenteert de verfijnde houtsneden en -gravures van kunstenaar en begaafd vakman Bernard Essers (ID/NL, 1893-1945), die in de jaren 1920 en 1930 deel uitmaakt van de kunstenaarsgemeenschap in Bergen. Zijn grafisch werk is zowel artistiek als technisch van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit, maar bleef lange tijd onderbelicht. Geïnspireerd door zijn jeugd op Java en de Aziatische prentkunst, de Engelse Arts and Crafts-beweging en het Nederlands symbolisme, ontwikkelt Essers een unieke stijl, waarin hij zowel zijn liefde voor de natuur als zijn belangstelling voor mythen, legenden en literaire thema’s tot uitdrukking brengt.

Experience digital animations that slow down, shift and linger. Between contemplation and systemic critique, Park moves effortlessly between painting and simulation, reflecting on a world shaped by crisis, consumption, and constant acceleration. A moment of silence, focus, and deliberate attention – for viewer and maker alike.
Grote Kerk Alkmaar – recently enriched by The Great Window by Fiona Tan (2023), a 6 × 23 metre spectacle of colour providing a breathtaking backdrop for Park’s work.

Op zondag 12 april vertoont Filmtheater Cinebergen (in de zwarte schuur), in samenwerking met Museum Kranenburgh, de film Night on the galactic railroad. Dit is een absolute animatieklassieker én de favoriet van kunstenaar Dan Zhu. Voorafgaand aan de film zal zij haar kunstenaarspraktijk en liefde voor deze film toelichten. Kaarten voor de filmvertoning zijn verkrijgbaar via de website.

Today we opened the new exhibition Overheated Windmill by Jaehun Park at the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar. So happy to have his beautiful work with us here in Alkmaar, work that is mesmerizing, but also offers a sharp reflection on the world we live in today.
Jaehun’s work explores how the many crises we are experiencing, from climate to politics and capitalism’ are not separate issues, but deeply intertwined.
As Ivo Bol said so beautifully today: although no humans appear in the works, the works somehow reveal the profound impact people have on the world.
Come and experience the exhibition on the high choir and in the chapels of the church. Free entrance every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until May 24th.

In de Grote Kerk Alkmaar zetten we telkens hedendaagse kunst in dialoog met het eeuwenoude erfgoed van de kerk. De afgelopen twee jaar hebben we in het voorjaar videokunst laten zien op het hoogkoor van de kerk en dat doen we dit jaar weer!

This year we will present three beautiful works by Jaehun Park on the choir of the church. Together they form a contemporary triptych that reflects on a world in which progress, power and vulnerability are inseparably linked. In addition, a series of artworks will be shown in several of the church’s chapels. In his video works, artist Jaehun Park reflects on how the major forces and crises of our time, climate change, capitalism, geopolitical tensions and technological development, are deeply interconnected.
Today we are installing the large LED screen together with @indyvideo and @mhb_av They have been providing us with LED screens for the past three years and always do an amazing job!

Overheated Windmill – Jaehun Park at Grote Kerk Alkmaar
From March 27 to May 17, 2026, the Grote Kerk Alkmaar, curated by Eliane Odding, presents the solo exhibition Overheated Windmill by visual artist Jaehun Park. His serene, slowly moving 3D animations explore how crises—from climate change to capitalism—shape our daily lives. Drawing on the high-speed energy of Seoul and Western European art traditions, he creates surreal digital worlds that invite reflection on our role as consumers in a tense and rapidly changing world.
Art and Church in Dialogue
Overheated Windmill is part of Hallelujah! Contemporary Altarpieces, placing contemporary art within historic church spaces. The series challenges visitors to reflect on heritage, nature, and humanity’s role in the climate crisis. Past exhibitions have earned national acclaim, such as I Wan’na Be Like You by Broersen & Lukács (2024) and Birdcage by David Claerbout (2025).
About Jaehun Park
(1986, South Korea) lives and works in Amsterdam. After studying painting at Seoul National University, he earned a Master in Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. His work is part of collections including AkzoNobel, Hyundai Motors, ING, LAM Museum, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Park has exhibited internationally and received the H/ART AveNEW Media Art Prize in Seoul in October 2025.

Tussen dozen, mappen en enveloppen duiken soms beelden op waarbij je het gevoel hebt dat je even echt heel dicht bij je onderwerp komt. Voor mij was dat onlangs deze foto van Victorine Hefting als vijfjarig meisje, vastgelegd samen met haar vader, waarin ze uiterst geposeerd aan het lezen zijn. Victorine met haar hand onder het hoofd van haar vader, alsof ze hem ondersteunt.
In mijn onderzoek naar het leven van Victorine Hefting (1905–1993) speelt haar jeugd een belangrijke rol. Victorine groeide op binnen de Nederlandse culturele elite, maar ook in een verscheurd gezin, waarin ze haar jeugd voortdurend op andere plekken doorbracht. Hoe vormden die eerste jaren van privilege, maar ook van onzekerheid, een voedingsbodem voor de jonge vrouw die zo’n toonaangevende rol in het culturele leven van Den Haag zou gaan vormen?
Ik werk gestaag verder aan de nieuwe biografie over Victorine Hefting. Deze week was weer een heerlijke week vol archiefonderzoek, waarin telkens nieuwe verhalen en inzichten naar boven kwamen.
