This is my fourth year in this incredible exhibition, and every year it is a huge highlight. This sculpture is pretty personal to me, as someone who has a few laps in the mental health rodeo under my belt. Performing 'okayness' when it's pretty clear that we're not okay is something a lot of us do, and I hope this statue encapsulates the absurdity of these interactions in a way that can help us open up a conversation about it.

This is a hard one.
On wednesday evening, I held Samson for the last time as he left this world. We had just left the vet's office after a routine checkup when he went into respiratory distress. His vets were wonderful, and if there were anything that could have been done, they would have done it. But in the end I had to make the call that i've dreaded since time began to stiffen his gait and rattle his lungs. I couldn't let his last moments be full of pain and fear, and so I held as much of his big boofy head in my arms as i could and sang a last wobbly lullaby to him as he slipped away.
The house is silent now, no castanet claws on the floorboards, no echoing volley of thunderous barks sending birds scattering from the trees, no loud bass panting in my ear when I'm working, eating, or doing anything other than paying him the attention he was rightfully due. I'm a ghost in my own house. Toast corners go uneaten, doors shut too quickly for fear of curious noses are left propped open, and I cannot bring myself to vacuum the final scatter of off-white fur from my bedroom carpet because it feels like erasing him all over again.
Oh, Sammy. Sam-a-lamb, Spambot, Slobberdog Milosevitch, President of Studio Dribbly, my precious boy. You were my hulking shadow, my stalward knight in slightly rank fur coat, always between me and the doorway, snoring with your eyes half open because you loved to scare the shit out of me. I have never been loved by anyone or anything like you loved me, and I truly will never love anything or anyone like I loved you. Those soup-plate paws carved out a space in my chest for you and I am hollow without you.
Wherever you are, baby boy, I hope you've been reunited with your beloved sister Rescue. I will see you again someday, and until then, I will miss you like a caught breath.
I love you so much, Samson. Always will.
