Raincoat time- There’s been little time to build over the last six weeks so it’s nice to get hands-on once again. With the hemp masonry portion of works done we’re now working towards getting the building to weathertight. We’ve opted for breather membranes from the Prolima range thanks @egmasterbuilder for making the products training and advice available in our region. These high performance products allow our hemp to still breathe and allow vapour through from the interior whilst protecting from water ingress from the exterior if any moisture accumulates behind the cladding. Most commonly you see hemp buildings rendered in lime with large eaves to protect as much wall as possible but here, we’re not rendering. A membrane and cladding on battens will provide protection both from weather and shading for the external face of the hemp. The low pitch roof uses Eggers E0 OSB (thanks Evan we couldn’t have obtained this without you) as a substrate for the roof membrane. When Otto claimed he was too sick for school he didn’t expect to be hanging out the Studio roof being mum’s scribe to record dimensions of the OSB to be cut for the parapet 😆. Owner builder parents are the worst! 😉

HANDOVER: Our off-grid house called #puttypassiv has been handed over to the clients, ready for them to bring the home to life. The hard landscaping is now in place thanks @bushylandscapes with the plan that the natural seedbank in the site topsoil, that’s now back in place, will spring to life in the next few months. This will be supplemented by minor soil and endemic plant translocation onsite. Can’t wait to show you the results in coming months and see Country unfurl. The photos show a collection of the site, before building started and photos by @builtbyeli taken on the handover day. The old site photos feature the ‘elder’ tree the living area is oriented towards. They also show a lush valley floor along with the black scorch marks on trees, from a bushfire that crept through in 2019. The site photos give you a sense of how sheltered the home is, nestled in the valley floor. On the flip side designing an off-grid home that is overshadowed by the hills adjacent, may not sound like a great idea. This is where using Passivhaus standard has been invaluable, as we were able to determine very accurately how much renewable energy the home needed for heating, cooling, hot water, cooking and lighting and then model how many solar panels to place on the shed roof, including the overshadowing effect of the hills, in mid-winter, to supply all the homes energy. This week we found out all the Passivhaus calculations have been independently certified by @hipvhype and the home has achieved Passivhaus ‘Plus’ certification, in other words it should make as much renewable energy, as it needs, all year around. For backup there is also a 3Kw low output fireplace that only uses wood from the property. Putty Off-Grid sneak peak. On Friday last week, we had a studio visit to our Putty project, before the owners move in. It was a chance to also test the home for draft proofness. Stefan from @sydney.blower.door was able to confirm we just meet the requirements, so we are still on track and targeting Passivhaus certification! Big thank you to all, for their hard work in achieving this mile stone. To get over the line, a special shout-out to Duncan & Eli from @builtbyeli , Evan and the team @egmasterbuilder for the prefab, @kinzelindustries for the high performance airtight windows.
