JKIBB releases its long-awaited debut album, Incarnadine, is out now via Outside in Music. One of the only jazz big bands in the world comprised exclusively of Native and Indigenous musicians, the 16-piece ensemble is led by celebrated vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and features a remarkable assembly of Indigenous artists from across Indian Country. Incarnadine draws its title from the Shakespearean word meaning "to redden," and the album functions as history, protest, and celebration in equal measure, illuminating a vibrant and often overlooked tradition of Indigenous improvised music. The program spans compositions made famous by 20th-century Indigenous jazz luminaries such as Mildred Bailey (Coeur d'Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), alongside new works from within the band itself.
