“When your mom says it’s at the top of her bucket list to climb Kilimanjaro with her daughters before she turns 70 - the world’s tallest freestanding mountain and Africa’s highest peak - you say ‘Okayy?!!’ and start mentally and physically preparing for the climb of a lifetime. Growing up, while others spent time on vacation lounging on an exotic beach somewhere, my family was adventuring in the great outdoors. Instead of fashion boutiques, you could often find us at sporting goods stores or wandering the aisles of the nearest @rei for gear. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that later in life - and six years into building @dunesuncare - REI would become one of my greatest supporters in two of the most rewarding and challenging accolades of my life, both personally and professionally. Now an investor in our business as of last December, and most recently a supplier of my gear for this monumental climb, I’m humbled and forever grateful for this full-circle moment and for how my relationship with them has evolved over time. 7 days. 19,341 ft. No showers. Living in tents. Freezing temperatures. Treacherous terrain. Dangerous altitudes. These are faint memories now, overshadowed by the indelible mark left by the people I met - the stories shared, the endless laughter, and the selflessness, vulnerability, and genuine kindness I witnessed firsthand every day. Big announcement day: @dunesuncare is now backed by @rei !! We are so unbelievably proud to finally share this huge milestone moment for the company—and for us personally. When we first connected with the REI Co-op’s Path Ahead Ventures team, the excitement was immediate. We always admired what REI stood for in our minds as fans & shoppers since we were kids—but what struck us even more was understanding what they value and stand for as an organization and fund. Path Ahead Ventures exists to support startups owned and led by Black, Indigenous, Latina/o/x, Asian American, and Pacific Islander founders—as well as female founders who statistically are given less than 3% of institutional backing, and minority founders, less than 1%. As a female- and POC-led company, that support felt profound. It was one of the rare moments in this journey where emotion hit before words—where we felt truly seen. The leaders of this program understand the challenges we face, and they share our vision of making the outdoors more inclusive so that everyone feels they belong in nature. That sentiment resonates deeply and personally for both of us. Fun story: When we were on our final diligence call with REI’s team back in July, Mei had to leave a few minutes early to rush to her DJ set at Surf Lodge for 4th of July weekend. On her mad dash out the door, she heard REI’s team say to Emily, “SO, ARE WE DOING THIS?!!” Emily, smiling, holding back all the emotions of disbelief, pride, sheer joy, looked up and out the door at Mei, who was jumping up and down, dancing, and squealing through the glass. An incredible moment we’ll never forget—and recognition of Mei that day, bossing at two jobs, and our team’s hustle and hard work over the years to get to this point. Huge thanks to REI for your support, belief, and this monumental honor—for seeing & appreciating us and DUNE as we are today and for what we are becoming. And most of all, for your great and much-needed work to support minority & female founders just like us. Let’s go!!!

Well, our first founder holiday dinner was a beaut ✨ Thank you to all of our friends who joined us last night — a few of you literally took a red-eye (that’s love); to our hosts at @luckyssteakhouse ; and to our wonderful partner & sponsor for the evening, @rhobusiness . Last night, everyone went around the table and shared what they’re most proud of from a big win this year and/or grateful for - something they’re not often given the opportunity to share or most notably, applauded for, and truly deserve.
