Happy Equinox! This week has been full of surprises… none of which felt ideal in the moment but which required some inner agility, a pivot. Tonight’s yoga class was no exception. Our usual space was unexpectedly unavailable so we took over the children’s courtyard at @sanmarcospubliclibrary and you know what? It was kind of hot and kind of loud and kind of magical too. Trees and breeze and Sky going from day to night. So grateful for the space and for my die-hard Monday night regulars who embraced the pivot with me and practiced in a different space.

On May 12, 2005 I was held up at gunpoint, barrel pointed at my face. If they’d killed me, I never would have met most of the people (and cats) I now love. I never would have reconnected with my Cherokee ancestry and obtained my citizenship with the Cherokee Nation. I never would have worked at a library. I wouldn’t have become a yoga teacher. I wouldn’t have written the books I’ve written. I wouldn’t have walked across Spain or visited Jerusalem. Wouldn’t have learned to play the flute or the cello, wouldn’t have learned to meditate. Wouldn’t have read all the wonderful books I’ve read or learned to grow corn. And about a million other things.
My life wasn’t theirs but somehow they gave it to me. I don’t know if those guys are still alive but I hope so. They took my purse (and my peace of mind, for a little while) but in exchange I got all of this.

I read this poem to my yoga class last night for savasana and when I looked up this Junebug was crawling right in front of my mat. I let him crawl around on my hand through savasana to keep him safe then released him in the courtyard. 🪲
