Tomorrow, April 30th, the &TNC sponsored"(Super)Models" opens at Nave 1, Intermediae Matadero, Madrid, running through June 21st as the main exhibition of the 4th Mayrit Biennial of Architecture and Design. This week on &&& Triple Ampersand, we publish “Luxury Activism: Art, Fashion & Capital” by Eduarda Neves, a structural critique of the contemporary alliance between art, luxury fashion, and financial power. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu, Neves revisits the homology between haute couture and legitimate culture, arguing that what circulates is not simply the rare object but the rarity of the producer: the brand, the signature, the proper name. From corporate foundations to museum boards and auction houses, luxury conglomerates exchange economic capital with cultural capital, consolidating symbolic authority while presenting philanthropy, accessibility, and “activism” as neutral goods. Through the case of Anne Imhof’s exhibition at Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and collaborations with Nike and Balenciaga, the essay confronts Frankfurt School critique with the libidinal economy of merchandise, asking how resistance is reformatted once it circulates as symbolic inflation.
