✨INSPIRATION: Outside In’s Artist of the Month for April 2026 has been Editoriat @editoriat , an exciting artist using collage, decollage and print techniques to confront societal issues and the toxicity of modern media messaging. Continuing with our exhibiting artists, From the Nineties to the Noughties, @editoriat worked as a freelance London sub-editor, moving between newspapers, magazines, and trade publications, checking, editing, and preparing raw copy for publication. While she once believed women were on a steady path towards equality, that sense has shifted over time, with equality now feeling increasingly out of reach. In a society where women’s value continues to be shaped by appearance, often used to sell products or reinforce the idea that they are not enough, Editoriat emerges as a creative response. Both a persona and a project, Editoriat allows her to process these tensions into something more generative than anger. Working at the intersection of paint and print, she remixes women’s magazine text and imagery to disrupt idealised narratives and propose alternative ways of seeing and being seen. Her work often reflects an ongoing interest in the invisibility of older women, explored through silhouettes and layered shadow forms. Alongside her practice, she continues to work as an editor and is co-founder and walker-in-opposition at @walkspacewm , a West Midlands walking arts cooperative founded in 2020.

Hi. I’m an editor by trade but, in my art practice, I like to embrace mistakes and subvert perfection, ripping up and remixing magazines (and other media) to change the aspirational or consumer culture narrative. For years, I worked as a freelance magazine subeditor, so this is… therapy? The collage and printmaking side of my practice lives here on @Editoriat . I have an ongoing interest in female invisibility so you’ll see a lot of invisible women, female silhouettes and multilayered shape-shadows here as a result. I also love to create and collaborate on art walks that explore invisibility, from anti-surveillance tactics to night walks to crone walks. I tend to do this through the walking arts coop @walkspacewm , which I helped set up in 2020. Artist inspirations: Sophie Calle, Linder, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Mickalene Thomas, Su Richardson, Hilma Af Klint, Guerrilla Girls, Nancy Spero, Lucy Gunning, Marina Abramovic, Nan Goldin, Chryssa Romanos and countless more. Exhibition and other inspirations: ‘Women Power Protest’ exhibition at @birmingham_mag was the show that woke me up to the power and difference of female-produced art. ‘What If Women Ruled The World’ at @emstathens and Sophie Calle at @thephotographersgallery London were two other highly influential shows that set me on my own artistic path - fuelled by an amazing local art club @artstirchley and coop gallery @artefactprojects . If you’ve read this far and anything resonates, feel free to get in touch. #invisiblewoman #magazinecollage #gelliprintartist #birminghamartist #analogcollageartist #dataprivacy #invisiblewomen

Pleasantly warpy … done in such a daze (and partly distracted by showing others the art of #gelliprinting) that I can’t quite remember how I did it. Which is just how I like my #monoprints.

London butter and gelli print sandwich! Happy to be back destroying mags and making gellies! After the @luna.photobham Care & Defiance exhibition launch, I had an incredible few days in London visiting old friends, old places and filling up on art and culture all over the shop, including: @thephotographersgallery @vamparasolwomenphoto @vamuseum @hapaxmagazine @approachgallery @hbh_gallery @vam_east @thenickelcinema

INVITATION: Care & Defiance, @luna.photobham ’s inaugural print exhibition, opens this #DigbethFirstFriday at @centrala_space , Birmingham. I have five magazine-collaged gel prints in this show that I’m excited to share. It’s time to go large on the co-llage! Opening night: Friday 1 May From 5pm onwards Centrala, Birmingham The exhibition brings together 11 artists selected from a national open call, alongside a salon showcase, with contributions from POST Photo Collective, UK Black Female Photographers, and the Lisel Haas Archive. The work explores themes of care, resistance, identity, and community through contemporary photography. Come say hi and be part of the conversations around the exhibition. The show runs 1–27 May so there’s plenty of time to see the art if you prefer a quieter contemplation. On Saturday 2 May, there are other events running - including a workshop (1-2pm) exploring the Lisel Haas and Grete Bermbach archive and (2-3pm) a panel discussion on being a woman in photography today. Hope to see you there. If I’m not lurking in the vicinity of the artwork, look for the dork in the Editoriat t-shirt (since no one knows who I am 🤐).

INSPIRATION: Outside In's Artist of the Month for April is Editoriat @editoriat . We asked her to describe her creative process of collage, decollage and print: "I describe my current process as ‘painting with print’ [...] I love the colour chaos and relative lack of control over the outcome. Zero expectation equals happiness when it works out, and lets me keep pushing the boundaries without a fear of disappointment or failure. The fast turnaround of gel plate printing means I don’t get too attached. I find the whole process exciting, freeing and good for the soul." 🎨 Read the full interview on our website, link in bio 🔗 🖼 Artwork: 'Fashion Consumption', Editoriat #OutsideIn #ArtistoftheMonth #AOTM #accessibleart #disabilityarts #inclusivearts #artistdevelopment #artistsupport #emergingartist #diverseartists #discoverartists

INSPIRATION: April's Outside In Artist of the Month is Editoriat @editoriat , an exciting artist responding to ongoing frustrations of how women are represented and addressed by the media through techniques of collage, decollage and gel printing 🎨 "As a young woman, I used to work as a freelance sub-editor in London. I loved working in magazine production and thought that journalism was a path to empowerment and change. What I didn’t realise until much later was how systemically toxic the media messages we consume can be – for women in particular. It’s a situation that’s still prevalent today in both print and social media, with women’s bodies idealised, objectified and exploited, and women patronised or made to feel ‘less than’ they are. Often this is dressed up as sharing advice or providing aspiration for beauty, fashion or lifestyle. Meanwhile, media advertising assumes we need anti-ageing or want to appeal to the male gaze or to correct things about ourselves that aren’t really an issue. So now I take women’s fashion and beauty magazines, and either deface them (decollage) or cut them up to poke fun at their text and images. Often, I’ll remix them to detoxify the message, or to seek out a different kind of beauty or humour in the content." 🔗 link in bio to read the full interview 🖼 Artwork: 'My Hair is a Message', Editoriat #OutsideIn #ArtistoftheMonth #AOTM #accessibleart #disabilityarts #inclusivearts #artistdevelopment #artistsupport #emergingartist #diverseartists #discoverartists #landart #environmentalartist
