Did they just find a real Cretaceous Kraken? A new giant beak fossil of the Cretaceous genus, Nanaimoteuthis, is described. Scientists find that the 5 species of Nanaimoteuthis can be sunk into 2 and that these cephalopods were actually part of the finned octopus group – Cirrata. The new giant jaw implies a much larger size than previous fossils. The authors provide a huge range! 0.67-1.84m mantle length for N. jeletzkyi 1.58-4.43m mantle length for N. haggarti but tentacle length could expand that to great sizes depending on the proportions of the actual soft tissue of the body. The paper throws out a total length estimate of 7-19m / 23-62ft. However, since the only remains preserved are beaks, and since octopods and squids have a huge variety of body shapes and proportions, this estimate is pretty much made-up B.S.! No real justification for it. Was it big? HELL YEAH! Was it bigger than the biggest mosasaurs? nah... --------------------------------------------------------------- 🔔 DM for credit corrections or removal. Gobiconodon zofiae is re-described, and the list of traits that diagnose it are further solidified. A new species is also named, Gobiconodon gongzhulingensis, based on some chunks of the face and teeth. --------------------------------------------------------------- 🔔 DM for credit corrections or removal. New basal whale is described from Eocene of India as Kalakocetus aurorae, based on a jaw and some teeth. That may seem odd, but remember that mammal teeth are highly diagnostic to species-level, unlike dinos. --------------------------------------------------------------- 🔔 DM for credit corrections or removal. Benjamin Bartlett, composer of the Walking With Series, and many other projects, has sadly passed away at the age of 61. Here's what Impossible Pictures posted about him (Most likely written by Tim Haines): "Devastated to hear that Ben Bartlett, the brilliant composer I used on Walking With Dinosaurs, has passed away. It was a huge shock, he was still in his prime. Almost 30 years ago when I started on WWD I had never worked with a composer, then I got a pitch from a composer who had never worked in television. But the pitch was so good, so full of mystery, majesty and excitement I did not hesitate. It was my lucky day. His music was the heart of the show. The emotion that beat under the glorious images. He will be sorely missed. He was a charming, modest and passionate man. A pleasure to work with and a genius musician. The music you hear now on this post is that first pitch he sent in - I still listen to it today. God bless you Ben."

I'm launching, SPINO SUMMER 2026! This summer I will be putting out pretty much nothing but Spinosaur content every week for three months straight. I know it will be a huge undertaking, but I think I can do it more easily than trying to make a whole week's worth of content on top of one video every week. Please take part in any way you feel like! --------------------------------------------------------------- 🔔 DM for credit corrections or removal. This week on @peoplearefish I have assembled the sci-com avengers alongside YOU the audience to ask @doritodon everything we could possibly ask about Spinosaurus Miribilus. Link to full video in bio. Two weeks ago we posted a video to announce the unveiling of Spinosaurus mirabilis, a new species of Dinosaur found in Niger, Central Africa by Paul Sereno et. al. 2026. This week, paleontologist Daniel Vidal is back to answer YOUR most burning questions alongside questions from dinosaur and paleontology science communicators YourDinosaursAreWrong, PaleoAnalysis, DinoGuy, DailyDinoGuy, DinoFax, EDGE Science, Jimmy from Dinosaurs will Always Be Awesome, BKbonesdinos, Ashley Hall, Natures Compendium, Skye Walker from Elevation Science, Raptor Chatter, paleoartist Tyler Stone and Dr Emily Keeble. This is #DanVidalUnleashed! And everyone is invited. Also this video is a chance to highlight the explosion of paleoart that has happened in response to this paper. Nearly 100 artists kindly allowed me to feature their artwork in this video. Thank you to everyone for submitting your work. Their pages are below (arranged in alphabetical order) please check them out and follow them if you like what they do. Thank you @ninamakesart for the incredible thumbnail art! 🔥

Extremely well-known and world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Hans-Dieter Sues has suddenly passed away at the age of 70. He was a Senior Research Geologist and Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and was loved among those who knew him as a kind, upbeat person who inspired many others in the pursuit of science. We lost another good one, RIP.
