I am here on a deep dive into traditional Senegalese drumming, guided by my inspirational teacher, Aly Ndiaye Rose, and the amazing drummer, Moustapha Mbengue.
🪘 This rhythm is a segment of ‘Metronom’ composed by the legendary Doudou Ndiaye Rose, Aly’s father.

It was an honor to study these Bullerengue rhythms in their homeland of Palenque. This is music that has survived centuries of displacement, slavery, and cultural erasure.
The Chalupa rhythm drives the dance: fast, fluid, improvisational, a conversation between drums, singers, and dancers. This is energy, history, and resilience all at once.
