@kidcudi I saw your post and it brought me back to 2008/2009. I'm with you my brother!!!
In 2009, we got a call from your manager Plain Pat and Hof from OnSmash. I think Kanye—or someone—gave them my number. They told me about you and a record called “Day N Nite” that was already picking up momentum on
@myspace .
I checked Cudi’s page and the backend data—numbers were moving. We immediately thought, we need to hit them back about a feature.
That same night I went out to see
@djreflex spin at a club. He played “Day N Nite” and the crowd literally went crazy. Reflex told me, “In a few months this will be the biggest song in the country—and Cudi’s down with GOOD Music.”
@djvice @clintonsparks and a few others Dj's also confirmed this with me.
The next morning I told
@roslynnc (RIP) we had to run the feature ASAP.
@amarsyal handled the graphics, and we scheduled it to air right after SXSW.
At SXSW, Cudi was walking down the street and everyone wanted to meet him. We did an interview, hung out—he was already a star. That night
@atrak threw a huge house party and Cudi performed and completely killed it.
@roslynnc and I were blown away.
We told our team: Cudi is the next artist we’re helping break on the platform.
We put the full Myspace machine behind him. Around that time, I was doing the
@itspacdiv deal with Motown when
@iamsylviarhone (God-Mother) told us they had signed Cudi. I told her however else we could help, we were all in.
We did the early album premiere for Man on the Moon on Myspace. Thank you
@squarebiz and
@xavierjernigan .
All of this is in an upcoming Myspace documentary.
Long story short: Cudi blew up on our platform first, then around the world. The
@jimjonescapo remix helped break him in Black clubs, but spring break, festivals, and the world were already moving—I saw it with my own eyes. We just threw gasoline on a fire that was already lit.
No one’s taking credit away from the artists. They built this themselves. Our goal was simple: build the biggest platform in music history dedicated to breaking new talent. That’s all we cared about.
