A photographer spotted an American mink on the shore of Lake Ontario. The animal had just finished eating a fish and was resting on an ice floe, calm enough to allow a close approach. A second fish lay in the snow behind it. When it was ready to leave the mink picked up its catch and moved on across the ice. Encounters like this show how adaptable these small carnivores are along cold shorelines, where they hunt fish, birds and small mammals throughout the year. Credit: @thisonesforthebirds

Photographer @mje_photography_ne documented an intense aurora display over Lindisfarne Castle in the early hours of the morning. He described it as the biggest panoramic of the most intense aurora show he has ever witnessed. The colors in the image come straight from the camera with no edits. Strong auroral activity can produce vivid greens, reds and purples when charged particles from the Sun interact with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Scenes like this depend on both solar conditions and clear weather, making moments of this scale rare and difficult to predict. Credit: by @mje_photography_ne

Angel Falls (Salto Ángel) is the tallest uninterrupted waterfall on Earth — plunging a staggering 979 meters (3,212 feet) from the summit of Auyán-tepui in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park. Fed by rainfall and mountain streams, the water free-falls for nearly a kilometer before turning into mist as it hits the forest below. Because it’s so high, much of the water evaporates or is blown away before reaching the ground. Hidden deep in the Venezuelan jungle, Angel Falls wasn’t widely known to the outside world until the 20th century, when American aviator Jimmy Angel flew over it in 1933 — giving the falls their name. It’s one of the planet’s most breathtaking natural wonders and a symbol of Venezuela’s incredible biodiversity. 🌍💧 Video by @_michaelgill_

Commerson’s dolphins (locally known as toninas overas) are among the smallest cetaceans in the world. Found in the cold coastal waters off Argentine Patagonia and around the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), they’re known for their striking black-and-white markings and playful, curious nature. They’re often seen riding the wake of boats, making every encounter unforgettable. Captured by @luis_burgueno_ph

This is the shoebill — and yes, it’s a real bird. Found in the swamps of central Africa, shoebills are known for their huge beaks, motionless hunting style, and eerie, unblinking stare. They can stand over 4 feet tall and have a wingspan of up to 8 feet. Despite their intimidating look, they’re shy, solitary, and rarely seen in the wild. Captured by @evanpossley

Volcanic eruptions have become a regular and dramatic feature in Iceland in recent years — and these clips show just how intense it’s been. 🌋🔥 Sitting atop a major tectonic boundary, Iceland is one of the most geologically active places on Earth. Lava fountains, fissures, and glowing flows have become increasingly common, capturing the world’s attention with every new eruption. Captured by @hemmihelgu #iceland #volcano #nature #earthfocus

These incredible photos by @krisluckphoto show a white ermine mid-leap across the ice in Kodiak, Alaska. Weighing just 3 to 6 ounces, ermines may be tiny, but they’re lightning-fast and agile predators. During winter, their fur turns pure white — a perfect camouflage in the snow-covered landscapes they call home. This seasonal transformation helps them stay hidden from predators and sneak up on prey like voles and mice. A beautiful example of how animals adapt to survive harsh environments. #ermine #wildlifephotography #alaska #nature #winterwildlife #camouflage #animaladaptations

Freediving through Silfra, Iceland, feels like drifting between two worlds. This rift in Thingvellir National Park is the only place on Earth where you can swim directly between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The water, naturally filtered through volcanic rock for decades, is some of the clearest on the planet, with visibility often exceeding 100 meters. Glacial cold, otherworldly silence, and surreal blue light make this one of the most unique underwater experiences you’ll ever have. Nazaré, Portugal is home to some of the biggest surfable waves on Earth — with swells reaching over 30 meters (100 feet) high. Once thought impossible to ride, this small coastal town is now a legendary destination for the world’s most fearless big-wave surfers. What makes Nazaré so unique is the underwater Nazaré Canyon, a massive trench that funnels and amplifies incoming swells from the Atlantic. As the waves hit the shallow waters near Praia do Norte, they rise into towering walls of water that crash with incredible force. It’s a perfect storm of geology, oceanography, and raw energy — and one of the most dangerous surf spots on the planet. Captured by @javier.goya (1) & benhartleyphoto (2) 🏄🏻‍♂️: @sebastiansurfs
