Students from RS3: Alentejo Research Unit recently undertook fieldwork in Alentejo, Portugal investigating the impacts of monocrop intensive agri-cultures, material extraction and drought in southern Portugal. With our partners in the region and using our critical field instruments, we surveyed the sites of a new mining project to evaluate impacts to surrounding ecologies and underground water systems and ventured underground through copper seams at Aljustrel to understand the impact of increasing demand for mineral extraction in the region. More images to follow! RS3 is led by João Ruivo and George Ridgway #environmentalarchitecture

Back from our trip to Egypt, RS6 tested soil collected from different locations in the Bahariya region—including samples from the White Desert and Black Desert—using soil chromatography. This photographic process creates an image of the soil’s composition, which we can then read by analyzing its color, rings, and radial details, giving us a broad understanding of the soil’s health. RS6 is led by Gabriella Demczuk and Kamil Dalkir

RS6: Saharian Becomings met with Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo to learn more about the beautiful and important work of the program. Through conversations with students and lecturers, we gained insight into their practices across sacred geometry, ceramics, glass, gypsum, metalwork, and woodwork, practices all made by hand. @art_jameel @jameelhouseincairo We were also generously welcomed by Mahmoud Khaled into his home for a studio visit and discussion of his visual and research-based practice. Our time in Egypt concluded with a day trip at the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids of Giza, a visit on everyone’s wish list. RS6 is led by Gabriella Demczuk and Kamil Dalkir

Students with RS6: Saharian Becomings conducted fieldwork in the White Desert of Egypt, engaging with different sites across the Bahariya Oasis. Evenings were spent around the campfire, reflecting on the day's experience and discussing readings by Franz Fanon and Edward Said, two critical thinkers whose work informs the studio's investigation into migration and the weaponization of the environment. Connecting theory to film, the evenings ended with a screening of The Battle for Algiers, projected under the stars. RS6 is led by Gabriella Demczuk and Kamil Dalkir
