At this point in my career, I receive nearly 100% of my education in the form of hired consultations.
An hour call with someone who is specialized in the exact area, relative to the exact scenario you are trying to find solutions to is substantially more useful and valuable then hours upon hours of self study and research
A call with someone is typically around $200-300 usd, but every single time, I leave the call with substantially more knowledge then that price is worth
I come into these calls prepared with my exact scenario and information I’m seeking out.
Not only do I now allocate nearly all of my educational budget to these calls, but I also get hired for them frequently as well
A little secret of the sports industry is that an athletes “coach” is oftentimes seeking out advice on their athletes from other coaches. Decisions are many times not being driven by the athletes actual coach. Many times even, an athlete will part ways with a coach, hire another, only to have that original coach still be a large factor in the decision process due to consultation
In day to day life, Ive often been told often that I’m difficult to read, difficult to understand, and that its difficult to know if I like who’s in front of me
Pretty much what dictates if I’ll get along with someone or not is how willing the person is to have a deeper then surface level conversation. I absolutely despise small talk, and surface/ obvious conversation. I rarely say the words “hi” or “hello” to anyone, and I get right to the exact point if I do engage in any conversation.
If you’re like me in this regard, these consultations are very fulfilling in that sense as they are by intention, not shallow, nuanced and aimed at progression
I find that 90% of people in day to day life get extremely uncomfortable upon deeper then surface discussion and will do anything to not engage in it and keep all conversation obvious and surface
If we get along, you’re probably one of the 10% who can, or else you live a life and behave in a manner that is extremely different then what is normal and you’re probably extremely concerned with training, nutrition and physical development. Or both
@cruzjim_ getting an early start on the offseason.
Cruz is an exceptionally talented hockey player. what impresses me about him however is his mental toughness.
Throughout my years of training him, I’ve far from babied him. I’ve challenged him continually. I’ve never even once seen him give in mentally from something being too difficult. No matter the demand, he will not break and he will go through it exactly how it’s asked
I’ve seen other highly talented players who are very fragile and have the mindset of being too delicate/ important to be doing highly stressful things in the gym
Cruz has top end talent but also world class grit and toughness. Not to mention his strength, power, conditioning is something that always turns heads.
I make sure he moves extremely well in everything he does, but I’m also not concerned about taking some risks and stressing him into actual adaptation. He’s hyper competitive, and always goes through anything I ask him to do
Thank you, coach, for continuing to push me harder. I love the high expectations because they force me to rise to the occasion.
You always have me prepared. It’s never easy and I don’t want easy. I want to win.
Thank you for being you… the hard ass who keeps me getting better. I appreciate everything you do.

If I don’t look very approachable, that’s probably just because I don’t feel like being approached
