My mom’s senior year ID card, 1981-1982, just one year before the Iranian hijab mandate. During her senior year, all universities were shut down as a result of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. She dreamed of going to school for economics. By the time these institutions were open, under Khomeini’s standards of “islamification,” she was pregnant with her first child. On this International Woman’s Day, I think of the young girl in this picture and the potential she had, in a country that once belonged to her. #freeiran
