Garden update: ๐ฟ Summer begins to transition into Fall ๐พ in this first-year mostly native Florida Friendly design. Rosinweed and Gauara are in their second bloom after sheering in June. Grasses are putting on blooms now. Their autumn presence will be more pronounced next year.
I love the tension between wild and orderly here. Thatโs a space I love to explore through design.
The seasonal shift from Spring through Summer was both lively and graceful, with only two stewardship visits to guide it through. Take a look at my previous post on this garden for comparison.
Thank you Carla and Jeff for letting me loiter through your yard with my camera all morning :)

A little over a year ago I was lucky enough to work with dear friend @e.galbicka on a completely custom cement bartop for Gainesville, Floridaโs @grandschemebrewing . The bartop is a rectangular C shape, 24 feet long on its widest side, and made of cast-in place trowel-finished fiber cement designed and constructed by Evan. A total of forty-four distinct collages were painstakingly silkscreened by Evan with acid stain.
Evan and I set out to explore Grand Schemeโs esoteric themes from a position of total collaboration. This project came in the middle of my branding process for the brewery, and our goal was simply to make a useful object worth pondering while enjoying a nice pint. Each composition was worked over by Evan and myself, using found images and hand made drawings, and required a highly communicative collaborative process. Photographing it has proven tricky, so youโll have to make the pilgrimage yourself to see the whole thing! ๐บ๐

Did an April check-in on Eleonora's & Haydn's Garden planted last November. Way Myrtle hedge should screen the back fence line within 2 years. All of the perennials are growing in nicely! Will continue to fill out over the year, and next Spring will be an even greater revelation.

Sharing a little experiment I made while at @oakspringgardenfoundation in 2023. I'm seeing procedural planting design tools starting to gain complexity and adoption in the field, such as with @land__kit and various landscape design studios exploring "Ai" planting design.
In this diddy I'm exploring how cellular automata transform an initial state, in this case a sketch of a bee flying around an aster at Oak Spring, into generations of cellular states. Using the grid patterns as landscape plans, individual cells can be assigned to various site suitable materials and species.
I wonder if cellular automata can be a way to visualize a garden's evolution through time, over many years?... like the distribution of germinating seeds from generation to generation, for example?
The human, the garden, and the algorithm entwined in cosmic creation.
Baptisia alba celebration post!
Wild White Indigo is a North American native plant that should be planted much more in urban spaces around North Central Florida. Itโs a very long-lived perennial that emerges early each Spring with a surprising asparagus-like stalk that unfurls into striking spires of white flowers. This legume fixes nitrogen from that atmosphere into the soil, and its flowers turn into black seed pods that rattle in the wind. One of my absolute favorites. Iโve been spreading it around Pulp Gardens for the last four years and it continues to dazzle.

Pulp Gardens, November, Vol 2.
Here are some more shots of the meadow zone in the South Garden @pulparts . This time of year we have a mix of dried plant stems and seed heads mingling with fresh flowers and evergreen foliage. A bunch of perennial wildflowers native to North Florida bloom in the late Summer and early Fall, such as Liatris, Carphephorus, Helinathus angustifolius, and many more. I'm officially over Miscanthus (got it out of my system) and will be substituting more native grasses for those in the Spring. I'll also be moving some of the bigger species further back this Winter. Always observing and learning in the garden. Torpedo grass is a humbling foe.

Pulp Gardens, November, Vol. 1.
The meadow and water retention zones of the South Garden at Pulp catch the mid-morning Fall light. A lot of changes made earlier this Spring are making some sense, and yet there's much to learn and adapt in seasons to come. The Florida native Senna (large yellow flowered shrub) is in big bloom right now. It grew three times the size it was last year when I planted it. Grasses including Adropogon, Miscanthus, Panicum, and Pennisetum glow as light passes between the many tiny hairs of their seed heads and inflorescence. I'm appreciating a sense of the garden settling into itself, a feeling of relaxation in the land. Maybe it's a Fall feeling? I'm so thankful to have moments to appreciate this space.

Imagine many small native plant gardens stitching themselves together through neighborhoods and cities like a quilt of newly created habitats.

Planting this proposal over the next few weeks. Eleonoraโs Garden is designed to create small moments of various plant groupings that wrap around a backyard perimeter. There are small areas in full shade that transition to a majority full sun exposure. Iโll be planting sedges for the first time! Hooray!.
