DXARTS Spring Concert: Aural Cinema. Wed, May 20, 2026, 7:30pm. Meany Hall, UW. FREE. DXARTS presents an evening of electronic music by composers Richard Karpen, Joseph Anderson and Juan Pampin. The works will be played through the DXARTS 3D audio array, a state-of-the-art, high-fidelity multi-channel system designed for unique immersive, spatial audio experiences.

We invite applications to the 2026 A-I-R Soft Data and Common Wares, at the University of Washington, Seattle, on the topic of ‘Hyperlocality’. ‘Soft Data and Common Wares’ is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the DXARTS Softlab, run by Afroditi Psarra and Design’s Studio Tilt, run by Audrey Desjardins. Both labs are interested in collecting, archiving, and critically transcoding data from the intimate spaces of the home and the body, and the search for meaningful interpretations.
Hyperlocality examines data, networks, and technologies related to matters of closeness and the personal. The hyperlocal might imply working with a very specific dataset, or building technologies that operate in a situated environment, off-the-cloud, or even off-the-grid. We envision multidisciplinary projects that explore the creation of artifacts, materials and interpretative processes. We invite thought-provoking juxtapositions of data that offer critical perspectives and build new vocabularies of commons.
We will host two one-month residencies, in Spring 2026. We encourage applications that engage with the student community and we expect residents to host an open-studio and give an artist talk. We envision that in the last week of the residency there will be an on-campus public showing of the work.
We offer $7000 total (including honorarium, airfare, and accommodation), shared studio space, access to fabrication equipment, a small budget for materials and an exhibition space.
Application deadline: January 31, 2026
Proposed residency dates: April 1 - May 31, 2026
Eligibility: Artists, designers, performers, creative researchers. Open to US citizens only, because of funding constraints.
For questions: Afroditi Psarra ([email protected]) or Audrey Desjardins ([email protected])

Mark your calendars and head to the Open Scholarship Commons at @uofwalibraries next Tuesday, November 18th from 2-5pm for a special workshop session led by @dxarts and @uwtextualstudies faculty, Laura Luna Castillo!
.
Exquisite Corpus. A Practical Workshop on Natural Language Processing for Creative Expression
.
This workshop merges computational linguistics and creative experimentation. Participants will use Python’s Natural Language Toolkit (NTLK) to analyze, deconstruct and algorithmically expand text corpora in a Dadaist spirit.
.
During the workshop, you’ll be guided through hands-on code examples to learn techniques for data augmentation and synthetic data generation. You’ll explore grammatical patterns, linguistic visualizations and randomization as meaning-making tools that introduce surreal linguistic styles into a corpus, generating endless variations of source texts.
.
Through this process, you’ll gain insight on how Large Language Models learn and adapt to linguistic styles.
.
Don’t forget to bring your laptop for this hands-on session! And head to the link in our bio for more information!

Join us for the DXARTS fall concert Hum Under the Riverstone on November 5th, 7:30 pm, free entry!
Hum Under the Riverstone explores different forms of connection and dialogue that can unfold among various kinds of intelligences: human, natural, and machinic. The title of this project draws inspiration from Édouard Glissant and his concept of archipelagic thinking.
This poet, playwright, and essayist contrasts two perspectives: that of continental thinking and that of archipelagic thinking. According to Glissant, through continental or systematic thinking “we see the world as a block, or at large, or at once, as a kind of imposing synthesis, just as we can, by way of general aerial views, see the configurations of landscapes and mountainous areas as they pass by”; in contrast, “with archipelagic thinking, one can glimpse the river’s smallest pebbles and the shadow holes in the water that form underneath them, where freshwater crabs still live.”
Thus, this performance seeks precisely to find those shadow holes in the water, that hum under the riverstone, and to ask what other kinds of relationships and connections we might establish between humans and machines.
Hum Under the Riverstone was created through a collaboration of the members of the Human-Machine Interaction Networks Directed Research Group, coordinated by DXARTS Assistant Professor Laura Luna Castillo.
In light of recent advances in generative AI language and image models, there is a critical need to address the ontological status of computationally generated artifacts. The DXARTS x EpiSTEAM Summer School aims to explore these developments and challenges through 10 days of intensive technical workshops, thematic discussions, and the public sharing/exhibition of a series of collaborative cross-disciplinary artistic interventions that stem from these discussions.
EpiSTEAM is a consortium of 14 academic and non-academic partners, including 8 campuses within the European Culture and Technology Lab (ECT LAB+). Working to develop interdisciplinary research programs between art, science, and technology, EpiSTEAM posits that diversification of epistemological positions is key to responsible technological innovation.

DXARTS is a practice and research-based PhD program at the University of Washington. Based in Seattle, artists, researchers, and students work collaboratively to reimagine our emerging relationships with new technologies, while critically engaging with traditional forms.

As a core EpiSTEAM member, DXARTS is hosting a 10-day intensive Summer School at the University of Washington from Monday, 23 June through Thursday, 3 July, 2025. These events will bring together participants from European institutions, DXARTS, UW Arts Division collaborators, interdepartmental partners, as well as off-campus guests working at the intersections of art, technology, and cultural production. Events will include technical demonstrations and hands-on workshops, artist talks and research presentations, roundtable discussions, as well as field-work across and beyond the Seattle campus.
Participation is free of charge, but there is a limited number of spots.
If you are interested, please contact Tivon Rice <[email protected]> to reserve your spot.
