My Mum - Fiona Skinner née Foott - passed away on May 20th after a long battle with breast cancer. She was a vivacious force of a woman. Eternally positive, energetic, extroverted and worldly. As a mother she was kind and encouraging, firm but friendly and could spot bullshit a mile off. She kept us honest and taught us to advocate for ourselves. She listened openly, loved overtly, laughed loudly and squeezed tightly.
She encouraged me to pursue music more than anyone. She trusted me to go to shows and festivals alone from age 15, paid for tickets when we were skint, picked up countless car loads full of gear and bandmates after gigs at any time of night and even helped me get a fake ID to go to and play shows.
Her influence on the Geelong community was profound and far reaching. She had an ineffable reputation as a swimming teacher but also a figure of significance to anyone who had the privilege of crossing her path, even briefly.
She constantly surrounded herself with family and friends who will miss her deeply.
Fiona loved seeing Gizzard play at any opportunity and would’ve wanted the show to roll on, so that’s what I’ll be doing.

This is a particularly special one for me as I somehow plucked up the courage to put a song on the table. Which is a hard thing to do for me to do when I work with songwriters and musicians that I absolutely idolise. But as much as my brothers in rock strive for perfection in their own work, they care and collaborate openly and earnestly in mine too. Which is real nice and cute and special and I’m real lucky thanks boys xo
