GAIA
BY DRUMMOND PROJECTS
Shortlisted: Bar Club Lounge - Global Award for The International Hotel & Property Awards 2026
A materially rich palette defines the 6,000-square-foot eatery GAIA, conceived by the interior design firm Drummond Projects. Rock-textured wall coverings, plastered surfaces, modular terraced sofas, and gracefully curved banquettes together evoke the mythological theme of this Washington, D.C. based restaurant, aptly named after the Greek goddess of the Earth. The design channels an abstract, primordial landscape through a selection of charcoal tones, stone-like textures, and lush foliage, establishing an atmosphere of natural beauty and elemental depth.

Housed within a three-story, 3,720-square-foot brick building, Top Chef Eric Adjepong’s first brick-and-mortar restaurant, ELMINA, was conceived and brought to life by the interior design firm Drummond Projects. The project embodies an experiential and culinary spirit that reflects Adjepong’s Ghanaian heritage while translating complex histories into a contemporary design narrative.

Architectural sensitivity was exercised to honor the original Renaissance Revival style of the building that was originally designed by Albert Goehner. The intervention sought to frame moments throughout the space. A white form, made from drywall, was injected to sit inside of the historical brick container. It highlights curvilinear recessing on the ceiling and arches cut out along the windows so as to mirror the original architecture of the exterior façade. Existing characteristics such as the original brick, oak paneled floor and terracotta ceiling were deliberately exposed to showcase the blending of old and new.
