Like many people I’m doing a ‘dry January’. To support this effort, my good friend @kendallneisess gifted me this bottle of ‘functional non-alcoholic spirit’, which in addition to being useful for making a good flavorful mocktail, claims to be able to replicate a couple of the effects of real alcohol… here are the active ingredients listed along with the evidence for them, in case you’re interested in trying it or a similar product!
L-theanine — an amino acid found in green tea that promotes calmness, focus and clear-headedness (relaxation without sedation). This is by far the most supported by science of these ingredients.
L-Choline Bitartrate — supports cognitive function and memory. Less evidence than the l-theanine.
Moringa extract — a plant extract with some purported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (though the evidence is light).
There are lots of others available if you’re interested in the functional aspects of mocktails, which would include ‘adaptogens’, nootropics and botanicals… do a little research and remember these additives aren’t regulated by the FDA… but potentially a tasty alternative regardless of the other effects!
Last month: eating out, ordering in, chocolate and snacks, movies and socializing. This month: protein boxes, meal prepping, gym time and long walks! I love the holidays but also love new beginnings. Embracing it all! #balance #2026
