October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so let’s talk about the disease that impacts nearly 1 in 8 women in the U.S. As a naturopathic physician one of my top priorities is educating my patients on what they can do to be empowered to be proactive about their health; Breast Cancer is no exception! Knowledge and early detection saves lives. So does nutrition! A nutritious, produce-filled diet can help reduce the risk of developing Breast Cancer. On the other hand a high-fat diet can trigger estrogen production which can fuel tumor growth. For tips on how to incorporate these ideas into your diet check out this blog post!

Radishes are members of the nutritional superstar cruciferous family. Known for their unique sharp, biting flavor both the root vegetable and it’s green leafy tops add a delicious peppery zest to your meals. All parts of the radish are an excellent source of vitamin C; the radish leaves boast almost 6x the vitamin C of the roots and are also a plentiful source of calcium. They are also a good source of trace mineral molybdenum (a nutrient we cannot make but must consume), folic acid and potassium! As a member of the cruciferous family the radish is cancer-protective, and has been used as a liver-protective food throughout history. It’s high vitamin C content allows it to act as an antioxidant, and it’s variety of sulfur-based components increases the flow of bile promoting the smooth function of the gallbladder and liver.
How to use: Interestingly, cooking radishes destroys the vitamin C content so it’s best to eat them raw. In this heat, I’ve been enjoying the combination of cooled radishes and cucumbers in an Asian flavor-inspired Smashed Radish Salad.
To make:
1. Slice both radishes and cucumbers thinly.
2. Use a heavy glass or jar to smash the radish slices gently.
3. Mix soy sauce (3 Tbs), sherry (2 Tbs), toasted sesame oil (2 Tbs), and honey (1 Tbs) to prepare vinaigrette.
4. Combine radishes, cucumbers, and vinaigrette in a bowl, and let the salad marinate and chill in the fridge until you are ready to enjoy!
Our herb of the month is Lemon Balm! Often referred to as the “gladdening herb,” it is uplifting to the spirit and calming when facing nervous tension. It can be a powerful ally when dealing with anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraines (particularly when stress is the cause), and hyperthyroidism. It is also a powerful antiviral and can be used topically for herpes simplex. I personally love the smell and taste of lemon balm and find it very easy to grow in a container or the ground - she is not a picky plant!
Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases a list of 12 foods with the most pesticides called the Dirty Dozen. Though this is not all encompassing - it’s a good place to start if you’re interested in buying organic. Better yet, use this list as a guide to inspire your summer garden!

In the wake of another school shooting, if you are mourning, devastated, anxious, or outraged YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I hope you are able to give yourself the space to feel whatever you need to feel. While I’m sending you all healing energy, I know the sentiment alone will not stop gun violence. As you process I hope you’re able to find a renewed strength and conviction to help work towards change. Here are a few places to start pushing our legislators towards real change. @momsdemand@everytown #morethanthoughtsandprayers
Meet the herb of the month: motherwort! Motherwort is a perennial plant in the mint family boasting a beautiful flowering plant. This herb is particularly useful in supporting new moms in the postpartum period! It helps to modulate stress and to tonify the uterus.. Some herbalists describe this plant as best for “gladdening and strengthening the heart,” and it may even be useful in combating that “empty nest” feeling. NOTE: it has a distinctly sedative impact, so, if you’re already feeling worn-down this may not be the ally for you! This herb is not to be used during pregnancy due to it’s impact on the uterus. Have you used motherwort? Let me know in the comments below!
Naturopathic medicine is a form of primary care that aims to treat the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. We have similar foundational science training to your allopathic medical doctors, but we differ in the ways we learn to treat pathology. Naturopathic medicine looks past treating the symptoms to determine the root cause of a condition and restore the body back to balance, so that it is able to heal. Reach out if you have any questions!

Today is Maternal Mental Health Awareness day. A shocking number of mother’s, as many as 1 in 5, AND father’s, nearly 1 in 10, experience some sort of perinatal mood and/or anxiety disorder. These conditions have the potential to go unnoticed and untreated often due to stigma. This can cause long-term trauma to both mother and child. Through building awareness we can prevent tragedy and push the development of treatment options. You are not alone. You are not to blame. With help, you will be well.
