Feeling incredibly grateful for the wonderful feedback, encouragement, and support for It’s Probably Your Period. Every message, conversation, and shared story reminds me why speaking openly about women’s health matters so deeply.
I will continue to use my voice to advocate for better understanding, better care, and better conversations around women’s health at every stage of life. We so often prioritise the wellbeing of our daughters, parents, partners, and loved ones but we must learn to extend that same care, compassion, and attention to ourselves too. Our health deserves to be listened to, valued, and protected.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. 💛

Hello everyone! With plenty of new eyes , I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself and share a bit about my journey.
I am Prof Mary Ryan, an Endocrinologist and Hormone Expert with a passion for Women’s Health, including Thyroid, Fertility, Menopause, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes. My life took a significant turn when I was widowed with twin boys aged eight and a daughter aged five. Today, I am proud to say they are thriving young adults.
I believe in the power of empowerment and education. Since 2007, I’ve had the honour of lecturing at the University of Limerick’s postgraduate school of Medicine and now serve as an Associate Professor at my alma mater, Trinity College. I also host and speak at conferences to help educate others about Hormone Health and share valuable insights through this page.
I want to express my gratitude to all my followers. I feel fortunate to be part of such a supportive community, mostly composed of women who uplift one another.
Stay tuned for details on my upcoming book, where I’ll delve deeper into these topics! 📚

Menopause doesn’t just affect women’s ovaries.
It also takes a toll on their brains.
Every organ in the body, including the brain, is controlled by hormones.
When women’s hormones level start fluctuating during perimenopause, this kickstarts changes to their brains and women can experience a whole range of different cognitive symptoms as a result.
We know from research and from speaking with women anecdotally that some women sail through perimenopause and menopause while others are seriously affected by the hormonal changes involved, but you do not need to suffer in silence.
Ask the questions, speak with your doctors and know you’re not alone in how you’re feeling.

Osteoporosis is preventable

Great advice on non invasive tests for Heart disease from Dr Julie O Brien Consultant Radiologist from @beacon_hospital Limerick and University Hospital Limerick.
Dr Julie is a great friend and has been lecturing at all my empowerment conferences and has a wealth of knowledge and an expert on cardiac CT calcium tests and CT angiograms.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of death in Ireland, claiming approximately 9,000 to 10,000 lives annually. It accounts for over one-quarter of all deaths in the country (roughly 27.8%), killing more people than all cancers combined.
We need to prevent disease so knowing you have disease means your Doctor can modify your risk factors
We need to be a lot more active in prevention
Your GP can refer you for these non invasive tests which can be life saving.

HRT does not cause cancer for the vast majority of women, and the evidence continues to show significant benefits for symptom relief, bone health, heart health, sleep, mood and quality of life when prescribed appropriately. Women deserve balanced, evidence based information not fear.

It was lovely to be on with @doireanngarrihy on @rte2fm this morning talking all about PMOS.
PCOS is a major health condition affecting more than 170million women and girls, and we needed to change the title from polycystic ovaries to PMOS(poly endocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) because it reflects the conditions linked to metabolism and multiple body symptoms symptoms including Irregular periods, difficulties with acne, excess body hair growth, weight change and insulin resistance.
It affects one in eight Women globally, yet awareness and diagnosis are poor. By focusing on the updated name, it is intended to help reframe PMOS as a serious treatable metabolic condition as opposed to a reproductive issue alone
This change is for our daughters, their daughters and the countless women yet to be born. This promotes clarity, understanding and extra healthcare from the very beginning. The new name will lead with hormones and recognise the importance of hormones.
Hormones control absolutely everything as you have heard me say on so many occasions.
We have known for many years, that women with PCOS have an increased risk of metabolic disorders including diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.
PCOS if often due to low estradiol and progesterone, yet for many decades doctors have tried to blame raised testosterone as the cause for this condition.
We are doing great research in this area and treatment is reducing inflammation, insulin resistance and settling the hormone imbalance and most importantly giving women good health and improving their fertility.

A DEXA scan is one of the most valuable tools we have for understanding bone health early, before fractures or osteoporosis become a serious concern. Prevention, early detection, and informed action are key to maintaining strength and independence throughout life.
