I had the honour of presiding over the 28th Graduation Ceremony of the Railway Technical Institute, where we celebrated the successful completion of training by the 2024/2025 sets of trainees drawn from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). This ceremony represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen capacity within the railway sector and to develop a technically proficient workforce capable of sustaining and advancing rail operations across the country. The graduating trainees underwent intensive and structured training in key areas including railway operations, engineering systems, safety protocols, and modern rail technology. Their successful completion of this programme is a testament to their dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence. As a Corporation, we recognize that human capital development remains central to the revitalization and modernization of Nigeria’s railway system. Our collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment continues to play a vital role in equipping Nigerian youths with relevant technical skills, while also contributing to national efforts aimed at reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic growth. During the ceremony, I charged the graduates to uphold the core values of professionalism, safety, integrity, and service delivery as they transition into the workforce. They have been trained not only as technicians and operators, but as critical stakeholders in the ongoing transformation of the railway sector. The event also featured the presentation of certificates and recognition of outstanding trainees who distinguished themselves during the course of the programme. The Nigerian Railway Corporation remains committed to continuous training, institutional strengthening, and strategic partnerships that will ensure the long-term sustainability and efficiency of rail transportation in Nigeria.

At the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) Quarterly Stakeholders Engagement, we emphasized the urgent need to strengthen rail-port integration as a critical driver of efficiency in Nigeria’s freight and logistics ecosystem. While we have made significant progress particularly through strong collaboration between the Nigerian Railway Corporation and port authorities under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is clear that more work must be done. Without efficient rail connectivity, the full benefits of our maritime reforms and deep seaports will remain limited. We must address the persistent challenges in moving cargo seamlessly between ports and across the country, especially within Lagos and along the eastern corridor. Optimizing freight movement by rail remains essential to reducing bottlenecks, lowering costs, and improving reliability. We are taking deliberate steps in this direction. Key projects, including the Kaduna-Kano rail line, are nearing completion, while efforts are underway to connect major ports to existing rail networks linking Apapa to Tin Can Island, Warri Port to the Itakpe line, and extending connections to Port Harcourt and Onne. Plans are also in place to link the Lagos-Kano corridor to Baro Port. We want to stress that this is a collective effort. Stakeholders, including transport operators, must support not hinder this strategic push, as road transport will continue to play a vital role in last-mile delivery. Finally, the Federal Government is advancing plans for high-speed rail development through private sector participation, with a dedicated committee already in place to drive implementation. Together, we must align our efforts to build a more integrated, efficient, and globally competitive transport system for Nigeria.

The Osun State Government, in partnership with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), continues to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of its citizens through the Salah Free Ride initiative. The train service from Iddo Railway Station, Lagos, en route to Osogbo, made a scheduled stop at Dugbe Railway Station, Ibadan, arriving today, 19th March 2026, at exactly 4:02 PM. This laudable initiative is aimed at easing transportation for citizens during the festive period, ensuring safe, comfortable, and affordable travel across states. Kudos to the Osun State Government and NRC for this thoughtful gesture, reinforcing the importance of accessible rail transportation in Nigeria.
