I recently had the pleasure of designing and producing a truly unique body of text, culminating in a very special project that came about through true collaboration and a delightfully improvisational process. Written by Ross Ellenhorn @rossellenhorn , "Sacred Originiality" is a psychological-spiritual manifesto that explores ideas of sacredness, profanity, originality, and the need for play within our everyday lives....also Jazz. Lots of Jazz. Ross's expertise in the field of mental health and trauma therapy, combined with his newfound interest and authority in psychedelic assisted therapy techniques weaves a text that's friendly, inspiring, poetic, profound, and a joy to read and explore. I was so excited for the opportunity to bring some of these ideas into new visual territories, with the help of the inimitable (though I constantly try to imitate her) @elanaschlenker , lots of public domain imagery, and tons of assistance and production guidance from the one and only Paige Rothaus @prothaus ... more to come, hopefully...including a more widely available version! Excited to finally share this work in a way that feels adequate! It was such an honor working with Junaco @junaco.junaco to craft the album artwork, identity, and packaging for their beautiful new album “In Motion.” This project was the perfect mix of passion, experimentation, collaborative spirit, and anything goes mentality you think is made up when it comes to client relationships, until it somehow happens to you. Over months, the band and I worked closely to discover the potentiality of the visuals in their songs, the uncharted territory they hoped to access through their own discovery of their music as a band, and how we could do justice to the spirit of the open and generous songs the band had written and recorded in scenic outposts and remote yurts, alongside natural beauty, and one another. Shown here are final photographs, documentation of process and final outcomes for the packaging and artwork. It’s been a so wonderful working on this project. The record is gorgeous, and I hope I did the music justice. Thanks so much Shahana, Joey, and Tejas for the trust, time, and commitment to making this what it ultimately became. The Lore has but thickened, and a mist of mania still lingers in the air. Hushed whispers of delinquency surface off the back of our first foray into the depths of experiments in soul and sound. The Grief was Good and the Mess was not contained, a static hum permeates through time and space. Rumor spreads through the ether one voice at a time, words traded in muffled purrs. Legend has it the rotting rose from the floor in vapor. Light and Sound Design did all it could to keep us slithering. Goose bumps raise and ears prickle as we pine angstily for what’s next. We heretofore announce our next @mess.is.lore x @goodgrief.flac descent on April 12th. Unbridled, we usher weary wanderers to the acclaimed Reforesters Laboratory, where a powerful and peculiar 24 point sound awaits the deranged; mangled in sound and sight. A web of tangled wires transfer signal to noise, cascading into a soft landing. A modular mist tingles the senses and shakes you to your core. Ritual mischief without the rules. Dare to join the procession? This Friday night March 20th at @dadabarnyc in Ridgewood, for the incomparable @a_n_n_i_e_g_a ‘s Low Intervention, me and my two fearless freakish and thoughtful gems of bandmates whom I cherish and am honored to share the stage with (@aaronisyourfriend and @red.lunch_ ) will gather the air and reassemble it as a trio for @a.place_to_go —synth odysseys, groove box lullabies, static hums, corrosive purrs, guitars lost in time, lots of delay, lots of space, lots of love. We will perform songs from my record Tie Dye Your Tombstone, reimagined and reinterpreted as future memories or waking dreams, improvised and reconstructed. Favorite moments of dissociative bliss from my first time on @kiosk.radio representing @goodgrief.flac in the EU! thanks to the generous and thoughtful @karolienpolenus for the invite. It was an honor to ride the sauna into the sky. Went deep and expansive with some of my all-time favorites and some new revelations. Probably my favorite mix yet; put a lot of love into it.
